We’re thrilled to celebrate our newest U.S. citizen! Priscilla worked closely with our staff to prepare for her citizenship interview and test, and all her hard work paid off. She proudly took the oath and was officially sworn in as a U.S. citizen on August 18! We couldn’t be happier for you, Priscilla. Congratulations on achieving this milestone!

Since joining Literacy for Life in early 2025, Vic has given more than 100 hours as a volunteer tutor. He works one-on-one with a learner building her English skills as she pursues a future career in nursing—and he regularly steps in to support our group classes, too.

Vic says he loves helping students “envision the opportunities that will open up with a greater communication skill-set. I have so much hope for them.”

We’re grateful for Vic and the many volunteer tutors who give their time, encouragement, and talents to help adults reach their goals.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Crystal L. Haskins to the Literacy for Life Board of Directors!

A proud native of Williamsburg, Dr. Haskins brings more than 20 years of experience in education, leadership, and community engagement, along with a deep commitment to the community that helped shape her values, voice, and dedication to service.

Dr. Haskins currently serves as Chief Learning Officer for An Achievable Dream and An Achievable Dream Urban Learning Leadership Center, where she leads multi-state school improvement and leadership development efforts. Her career has spanned the full continuum of educational leadership, from classroom teacher and principal to district leader, executive coach, consultant, and adjunct professor.

Beyond education, Dr. Haskins is deeply committed to community leadership and historical preservation. She serves on the James City County Planning Commission and is a contributing author to The Williamsburg Bray School: A History Through Records, Reflections, and Rediscovery.

Known for her authentic, people-first approach to leadership, she believes meaningful change happens when relationships, strategy, and community come together. We are delighted to welcome her experience, perspective, and passion for service to Literacy for Life!

We're excited to deepen our partnership with the Hampton Public Library as we continue broadening our footprint across the Virginia Peninsula. Our goal is simple: to ensure that adults in every corner of our community can easily access the education and support they need.

In August, we will be at the Hampton Public Library on the 13th and 27th from 2:00–4:00 p.m. to connect Hampton residents with adult education services, including English language learning, reading, writing, math, high school completion, workforce preparation, and more. Thanks to the library for their partnership!
