Advancing Quantitative Approaches to Race, Ethnicity, and Culture in Counseling

Guest edited by Dr. Janeé Steele (Walden University), this special issue seeks rigorous, culturally grounded quantitative work that treats race, ethnicity, and culture as central to research questions, design, and analysis — not as peripheral demographic variables.

Call for Papers

Dr. Carlos Hipolito-Delgado and I are co-editing a special issue of the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development:

"Refusing the Racial Equity Detour: Recentering School Counseling on Students and Systemically Vulnerable Communities in a Time of Retrenchment."

Right now, immigration enforcement is reverberating through schools. Books are being banned. Anti-DEI legislation has made our profession itself a target. And across the field, the language of equity and social justice is going quiet. This issue is about naming what's happening and lifting up the counselors, scholars, and communities refusing to retreat.

We're looking for work that centers the whole student — dignity, mental health, school climate, family and community partnership — not just application counts and matriculation rates. Work grounded in the strengths and cultural wealth of the communities we serve, not deficit narratives.

✍️ Full-length manuscripts AND brief reports (up to 3,000 words) are welcome — brief reports are a great fit for practicing school counselors with timely, on-the-ground insights.

A note on fit: we're seeking theoretically grounded, publication-ready submissions that clearly advance equity-centered, justice-oriented, or liberatory aims. Purely descriptive literature reviews without a conceptual or justice-oriented contribution won't be considered — so bring your strongest, most polished work.

Deadlines: Brief reports — November 1, 2026 | Full manuscripts — December 1, 2026

🎉 Congratulations to Spencer Allison, EdS, NCC, doctoral candidate in Counselor Education at William & Mary's School of Education, on receiving a $2,000 Graduate Student Grant from the Association for Counselor Education & Supervision (ACES)!

The grant supports Spencer's dissertation, in which he is developing and validating a scale measuring school counselors' self-efficacy in implementing su***de postvention and response services.

This is important work. Spencer's scale is designed to inform graduate and post-graduate training and professional development in postvention, strengthen advocacy for su***de-specific crisis protocols in schools and for appropriate school counseling roles in crisis response, and give researchers a measurement tool in an area that badly needs one.

We are proud to see our doctoral students taking on questions that matter this much. Congratulations, Spencer -- Go Tribe! 👏
