Great information on late talkers and the "wait and see" approach from my friend and fellow SLP Kim Kean.

If you have a little one that you suspect may be behind in language skills, don't wait. At Lantern Speech & Reading Intervention we have immediate availability and can help your child build strong language skills that will impact them even into adolescence.

An ounce of prevention may be worth a pound of cure!

You have probably heard of the “Wait and See” approach when it comes to referring a child to speech therapy services. This approach is based on the concept of children not being referred to a speech and language pathologist, despite being behind their same-age peers, because of the assumption that they will “catch up eventually.”

Research has shown that at least one in five of these “late talkers” will be diagnosed with a language disorder. This group of children would have benefitted from the most immediate intervention.

But then of course there are the “late bloomers” that can catch up to their peers without intervention.

However, even though they seem to catch up, late bloomers often evidence language weaknesses through adolescence in the areas of literacy skills, speech processing, and other areas that rely on language such as social skills, executive functioning, etc.

So, even though a late bloomer may look like they caught up, intervention would have helped support them in achieving those milestones sooner and possibly avoided difficulties in other areas later in life!

So, let’s not wait and see, but go and talk…. to that pediatrician about getting a referral sooner than later if there are any concerns!

Another fun filled week of Fun with Phonics Reading Camp has come and gone. Thank you to all of my amazing helpers and to the families who sent their children to spend time with me in Sessions 1 & 2. We had a great time.
