Wall to Wall, 8 of 12: the Meadow Voles 🐁

"When did Virginia stop being British — and who got to decide?"

The Voles labeled their wall like a syllabus: Quotes. Questions. Facts. Big Ideas. Artifact. Strategy. Then they filled every section.

Under Big Ideas: live with intention — think about the far-flung consequences of actions. Conflicts over power don't always involve violence. Don't use past tense when talking about tribes. Our country is a work in progress, still creating a more perfect union.

Under Facts: to***co changed the course of the English, the enslaved, and the Powhatan — and it was a smuggled Spanish seed that did it.

Under Questions, one that stops you cold: what did the past smell like?

You know that feeling when an edit finally clicks?

Do that all year. Our Educational Media Intern works alongside our Media Producer on video for lilyPD — a learning platform used by K–12 teachers. You'd be in it from the start: setting up cameras, lights, and sound, running audio on shoot days, cutting first-pass edits, building graphics, keeping the whole course library looking like it belongs together.

Not fetching coffee. Actually shooting, actually editing, actually shipping.
Paid, up to 25 hrs a week, all year with a shot at extending into Summer 2027. Premiere, Resolve, Final Cut, Canva, a DSLR you've figured out on your own — bring whatever you've got. Send a reel or sample if you have one.

Wall to Wall, 7 of 12: the Marsh Rabbits 🐇

"History is an action. Teaching is the window to an active citizenry. Place is the entry point."

The Rabbits worked out an equation and put it under a blue banner: People + Place + Time = Shaping the destinies of our future.

They also did the hardest thing on any wall this week. Beside a picture of docked ships, two sticky notes sitting one above the other: what those ships symbolized to white Americans, and what the same ships symbolized to African Americans. Same object. Two irreconcilable meanings. That's the whole lesson in two Post-its.

Elsewhere: picture books to teach resistance to slavery, a card marked TBD? unfinished history, and a note that says a story helps us question what makes us comfortable versus what's true.

Ever wonder who decides what gets taught in schools — and how a program actually gets in front of teachers?

You'd spend the year finding out. Our Strategy & Partnerships Intern researches state education departments, licensure rules, and district landscapes, then turns that into real outreach: pitching school partnerships, writing announcements that land in state DOE newsletters, digging into user data to make a K–12 learning platform better.

It's research with teeth. What you find shapes where we go next.

$15/hr, up to 15 hrs a week, fully remote, September through May. Good fit if you're in business, analytics, data science, marketing, or education — and you like being handed a question nobody's answered yet.

Civics Minute, a new short-form series designed to make civic life understandable, relevant and accessible, will launch Monday, September 7, on WHRV 89.5 FM and online at WHRO.org/civics.

New episodes will air on WHRV at 7:31 a.m. and 4:32 p.m. Each installment will run approximately 90 seconds and will also be available online for on-demand listening.

Produced through a collaboration between William & Mary and WHRO Public Media, Civics Minute uses an alphabet of key terms to explore citizenship, government, democracy and public participation. Each episode introduces a civic concept through clear explanations and relatable examples, connecting it to the institutions, decisions, rights and responsibilities that affect everyday life.

Strategic Cultural Partnerships was a key partner in developing and producing the program with WHRO.

Wall to Wall, 6 of 12: the Laughing Gulls 🐦‍⬛

"Complicated early America leads to complicated modern America."

The Gulls put that at the center of their wall in careful cursive, underlined twice, and built everything else around it. Jamestown as a case study in unintended consequences. History as an active verb. And a question left hanging on an orange sticky that nobody quite answered: when is cleaning up history warranted — and do we know when it's been cleaned up?

Elsewhere: lived experiences stick better. Dispel ignorance, don't promote it. And a working definition of what student voice actually requires — discussion, ownership, empowerment — next to the reminder that sharing an opinion in class means agreeing to have it critically evaluated.

Wall to Wall, 5 of 12: the Horseshoe Crabs 🦀

"We are still here."

Four words on a pink sticky note, next to a teacher's own commitment: be more diligent about student inquiry, and inquire into their culture and their ancestors in the forming of the U.S.

The Crabs built the most hands-on wall of the bunch. A drawn trunk of artifacts for teachers to borrow for their classrooms. An actual cotton boll taped up beside a card explaining that before the gin, a worker could spend ten hours cleaning a single pound of fiber. Faces sketched for Todkill, Angela, and Abbott so students meet people, not dates. And a Claim–Evidence–Reasoning organizer with a header that says it all: Tell the story.

Their open question, written across purple paper: does the 1787 Constitution affirm or betray the ideals of 1776?

Wall to Wall, 4 of 12: the Great Blue Herons 🪶

"All history is local." — Ed Ayers

The Herons took that seriously. Their wall runs from the Virginia Charter to 1776 to a torn-paper collage that spells out WE THE PEOPLE across a manuscript page, with room in between for a warning every history teacher should tape to their desk: be cautious of historical averages.

They also gave us the line "the un-united colonies," a card reading "first person narratives are more effective than any textbook," and a reminder that "just my opinion" is not a carte blanche to say whatever you want.

Under a big yellow card that just says THINKING…, they worked out where the human connection lives: identity, power, choice.
