Yesterday marked 23 years with Herb Pharm

For a gardener, there is no greater joy than being able to spend my working life in a place like this.

Herb Pharm has given me countless moments of happiness, purpose, and inspiration.

The photo is of the barn that still stands today. Its roof has since been replaced, and all of the perennials that once filled in the border have been moved to the Botanical Garden.

The landscape continues to evolve every day, but my soul is still exactly where it was on my first day in 2003.

Grateful for these 23 years, and for all that is still to come. 🌿

What began as a small outreach program at the Herb Pharm Botanical Gardens has now grown into its seventh annual event. We have an outstanding lineup of knowledgeable speakers who are experts in their fields and will be sharing their expertise on pollinator conservation.

In previous years, Herb Pharm hosted this event at the Botanical Gardens. This year, however, Herb Pharm is participating as a sponsor while the event is being hosted in collaboration with the Jackson County Master Gardeners at the OSU Extension Office in Central Point.

I hope you'll join us! We'd also appreciate it if you could share this event with your family and friends.

This morning, one of our interns came up to me and said,

“I have something for you.”

It was the dead butterfly she had found during a plant walk and she thought of me the moment she saw it.

I don’t know how others would feel, but to me, it was such a small yet meaningful gift that brightened my morning.

According to iNaturalist, this butterfly is a California tortoiseshell (Nymphalis californica), a native butterfly of western North America.

Is it true?

Are there any other insect identification apps you’d recommend?

Recently, our founder, Sara Katz, stopped by and harvested some fennel flowers.

I was fortunate to catch up with her and talk about the garden and all the memories we’ve shared there.

Herb Pharm Botanical Garden is bursting with wild fennel (Foeniculum vulgare).

Unlike Florence fennel, this variety does not form a bulb. Native to the Mediterranean region, wild fennel has become naturalized throughout much of the West Coast, including Southern Oregon.

This drought-tolerant plant is incredibly useful. Its feathery leaves, bright yellow flowers, and seeds are all edible and have long been valued in both culinary and herbal traditions.

Fennel is also an important host plant for swallowtail butterflies. It provides a home for their caterpillars, helping support pollinators and the biodiversity of our garden.

Everyone was all smiles after the tea class—including our instructor!

Sarah Hasler is a head of botanical affairs at Herb Pharm.

She is an herbalist and dietitian.
Her first plant memory is “making portions” as a very small child with an aromatic w**d, Pineapple w**d.

Also her first herbal tea was made with Catnip growing as a w**d in the suburbs of Chicago.

What’s your first plant memory?

Herbal Tea Making Class at the Herb Pharm Botanical Garden 🌿

This workshop wasn’t about making the perfect cup of tea.

It was about giving people the chance to connect with the plants,

To finish the class, everyone filled a Mason jar with their favorite herb blend to take home and enjoy as either a cold infusion or a sun tea. ☀️

Since everyone created their own unique blend, I can’t guarantee they all tasted good. 😄

But seeing everyone’s smiles at the end of the workshop made it a perfect 10 for me.
