Middle School Students Reenact
The American Revolution

To enhance the eighth grade curriculum, students at Willard Middle School will hold t

he twelfth annual Revolutionary War Reenactment and Encampment on May 12-13, 2017. Students will reenact famous events and battle scenes from the era, like the Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, Valley Forge, Yorktown and others. Students in period clothing will be learning crafts and activities such as tin punching, paper making, land surveying, military drilling, hearth kettle cooking, food preservation, knitting, pottery, and more. General George Washington may even make an appearance. After completing an application, including research on a Revolutionary War soldier and a first person character sketch, some students will earn the opportunity to attend a military ball. The evening event will be completed with live vocal and instrumental music. These individuals will also spend the night in period tents. Saturday morning students will portray life in the encampment for the community. The Revolutionary War Reenactment and Encampment benefits the students by participating in authentic representations of the home and daily life of minutemen and colonial citizens. The community is invited to journey back in time between 3:30 - 5:30 PM on Friday and between 8AM and 1PM on Saturday.

A recently-donated glass case allows the Firelands Historical Society to display an original letter that Aaron Burr wrote to Alexander Hamilton in 1804 — weeks before their infamous duel. This case inside the Firelands Museum in Norwalk also displays a short letter written by Hamilton, though not to Burr. These letters are now being publicly displayed for the first time.
