🎉 Congratulations to Ms. Kiona Johnson! 🐝❤️💛

We are excited to celebrate Ms. Johnson on her acceptance into UNC Wilmington’s 2026–2029 Promise of Leadership Cohort!

The Promise of Leadership program, sponsored by UNCW’s Watson College of Education, is designed to recognize and develop the leadership potential of beginning teachers across our region.

Over the next three years, Ms. Johnson will participate in professional learning focused on leadership, wellness, and building a long and successful career in education. She will also attend UNCW’s Beginning Teacher Conference each year and work alongside experienced Master Teachers who will serve as mentors as cohort members grow into future teacher leaders.

We are incredibly proud of Ms. Johnson for being selected for this opportunity and for her continued commitment to growing as an educator and leader. We can’t wait to see how she continues to Lead the Way at Penderlea!

📚 Learning Together to Better Support Every Student! 🐝

This week, Mrs. Soles and Mrs. Treto worked with our staff to provide differentiated professional development focused on supporting the wide range of learners we serve at Penderlea—from our multilingual learners (ML) to our gifted students and everyone in between.

The session gave staff an opportunity to think intentionally about how we adjust instruction, provide the right level of support and challenge, and create learning experiences that meet students where they are while continuing to move them forward.

Just as we ask our students to keep growing, our staff continues to learn, reflect, and strengthen our practice so that every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Thank you to Mrs. Soles and Mrs. Treto for leading this important learning!

🐝 Starting Quarter 2 with Purpose! ❤️💛

As we begin the second quarter, our administrative team met with students at each grade level to talk about how every Hornet plays a role in helping Penderlea reach our schoolwide goals.

Students reflected on the importance of academics, attendance, behavior, expectations, and safety—and how the choices they make each day can move both themselves and our school forward.

Through our Leader in Me work, we connected this conversation to Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind. This habit is about having a plan and a purpose, setting goals, and thinking about where you want to go before deciding how to get there.

We want our students to understand that leadership starts with ownership. Being proactive, setting goals, making responsible choices, showing up each day, and doing your best all matter.

Quarter 2 is a fresh opportunity to Begin With the End in Mind, take ownership of our growth, and continue building a school where every student can learn, lead, and succeed.

Let’s make it a great quarter, Hornets!

Leading the Way to Nationals! 🌟 Our Penderlea Elementary Beta Club has earned a spot in the Collaboration Connection competition at the National Beta Convention after an outstanding performance at the North Carolina Beta Leadership Summit! Embracing this year’s theme, “Lead the Way,” our young leaders demonstrated the power of teamwork, creativity, collaboration, and leadership. We couldn’t be prouder of these remarkable Hornets as they prepare to take their talents to the national stage! ❤️💛🐝

🍎 Behind the Plate: Penderlea School

“Pizza, pizza, pizza!” 🍕

Cafeteria manager Kimberly Brown says pepperoni pizza brings plenty of excitement to Penderlea’s lunch line. Her favorite part of the day? Seeing students come in smiling and happy.

Behind those meals is a team working each day to prepare safe, quality food and follow the menus and food safety guidelines that guide their work.

During National School Lunch Week, we’re celebrating Kimberly and the Penderlea cafeteria team. Thank you for the care you put into every school day!

Congratulations to our Junior Beta Club! Way to go! At the Leadership Summit Junior Beta Club won 2 events that qualified for Nationals in Texas.
1. Collaboration Connection: Samantha Lopez, Kailtyn Kistler, Tristian Estrada, Riya Patel, David Carr and Jaemarion Allen
2. All the World is a Stage: Raegan Umphress, Reyden Bryant, Caroline Lippard, Jocelyn Atkinson, Gavin Bordeaux, and Braxton Murray

We also nominated Reyden Bryant to be our Leadership Representative and he interviewed and was chosen as one of two Leadership Representatives for NC for the 2027-2028 School year. He will also go to Nationals in Texas for this.
