We wanted to highlight a few of the great stories we received about our adoptable pets from some really talented students! 🖍✏️Our volunteer Sarah is a Bonner Leader at Wilkes University who has participated in Reading Buddies which is an after school tutoring program created by the AmeriCorps VISTA on campus. The mission of the Reading Buddies program is to increase youth literacy by creating mentoring relationships between college students and the youth in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District. This project was completed with a second grade class at Kistler Elementary School. 📚We love all the stories and the drawings! Thank you so much!

Yesterday we finished up our last day of Reading Buddies for the 2022-2023 school year! Our second graders made sure we left with some personalized drawings from them. Now we are looking forward to wrapping up the year with our end of the year bowling celebrations at Chakos in a few short weeks!

Last day to donate new or gently used children’s board, picture, or chapter books for the 8th Annual Children’s Book Drive of the Wyoming Valley United Way! So far we have collected over 210 books! Great work Wilkes community!

The Office of Civic Engagement and the University Staff Advisory Committee are partnering to assist the United Way of the Wyoming Valley for the 8th Annual Children’s Book Drive. Please donate new or gently used children’s board, picture, or chapter books. Collection boxes have been placed in the following locations on campus: Henry Student Center, Starbucks, the Farley Library, Stark Learning Center Lobby (near the POD). On campus donations will be taken until Wednesday, April 12th! Contact [email protected] or [email protected] with questions.

Join us for our new Reading Tails initiative!

Once a month, children will have the chance to read to an adoptable animal from the SPCA of Luzerne County to practice their reading skills.

Our first reading session will be right here at the library on Saturday, March 18 at noon.

Children ages 4 to 7 are welcome and will take turns reading to an adoptable bunny! Books will be available at the library.

They'll then be able to interact with the animal one by one after the reading, under the supervision of an SPCA volunteer. Parents are also welcome!

Registration will begin Tuesday, February 21.

Space is limited.
