I ran into one of my recent birth dads today, and I walked away SO proud. 🥹💙

He was absolutely GLEAMING as he told me how well Mom and baby are doing.

But what really stood out to me was how much he KNEW. I am not surprised because he was at nearly EVERY prenatal appointment. I got to know him just as much as mom!

He knew how breastfeeding was going.
He knew about her milk supply.
He knew baby’s sleep patterns.
He told me how they’ve been alternating shifts so they can both get rest.
He spoke about Mom’s experience with so much empathy.
And he even remembered, “You guys offer postpartum support too, right?”

YES. WE DO. 😭

This is what I mean when I say fathers belong in the conversation about birth and postpartum.

Not standing on the sidelines.
Not waiting for Mom to tell them what needs to be done.
Not simply “helping with the baby.”

Engaged. Informed. Attentive. Parenting.

There was something so beautiful about hearing a father speak confidently about what was happening in his own home—his partner’s recovery, their feeding journey, their baby’s needs, and how they were navigating this new season TOGETHER.

Birth work isn’t only about helping someone have a baby.

We’re helping families transition.

And sometimes you get to run into them afterward and see the fruit of it in real time. 🥹

THIS is the village. 💙

September is Infant Mortality Awareness Month. 🕊️

As a doula, infant mortality is more than a statistic to me.

I have had the privilege of standing beside families during some of the most beautiful moments of their lives—but I have also stood beside families when pregnancy and birth did not end the way anyone prayed, planned or hoped.

Those experiences stay with you.

Behind every infant mortality statistic is a baby who was deeply loved. There are parents, siblings, grandparents and entire families whose lives were forever changed.

This month is an opportunity to bring awareness to infant loss, but also to the factors that can impact infant survival—including prematurity, birth complications, congenital conditions, safe sleep, access to quality prenatal and postpartum care, and the disparities that continue to affect families across our communities.

Awareness should lead us to education.
Education should lead us to advocacy.
And advocacy should lead us to action.

It should also remind families who have experienced loss that their babies are not forgotten. 🤍

That peanut-shaped ball isn’t just another cute birth prop. 😂💜

One of the biggest things I teach families is that labor doesn’t always need more effort, sometimes we need better positioning.

A peanut ball can be used in a variety of positions during labor, including when someone has an epidural and has more limited mobility. It can help us support comfortable position changes and create opportunities for movement and space as baby makes their way through the pelvis.

But here’s the important part:

I don’t want you seeing one for the first time while you’re in labor. 😭

In my childbirth education classes, we’re not just talking about birth, we’re practicing for it.

We talk about:
✨ Labor positions
✨ Comfort measures
✨ Pelvic movement
✨ Birth and peanut balls
✨ Partner support
✨ What changes if you choose an epidural
✨ And how to adapt when labor doesn’t go exactly according to plan

Because birth preparation isn’t about memorizing a perfect sequence of events.

It’s about having a toolbox so when labor says, “Okay, now what?” you have some answers. 💜

Dilation Board — “So…what does 10 cm actually mean?” 👀

Everybody knows you’re supposed to “get to 10 centimeters” before pushing…

But have you ever actually SEEN what 1–10 centimeters looks like? 😭

This is exactly why I love hands-on childbirth education.

We’re not just memorizing terminology. We’re learning what your body is actually doing during labor, what your care team is assessing, how labor can progress, and what those numbers mean when you hear them in the room.

Because hearing, “You’re 4 centimeters,” feels very different when you actually understand what that means.

My goal isn’t to teach you how to have the “perfect” birth.

My goal is for you to walk into your birth saying:

“I understand what’s happening. I know what questions to ask. And I know I have options.”

That’s informed birth. 💗

This might ruffle a few feathers… but I think we need to talk about it. 👀🎤

In our very necessary work of centering mothers in birth and postpartum, have we accidentally created a culture where well-meaning fathers are treated like spectators instead of parents who also need preparation, education, and support?

I’ve watched fathers WANT to help but have absolutely no idea what to do.

We tell them, “Support her.”

Okay… but did anyone teach them HOW?

How to recognize when she’s overwhelmed.
How to advocate without speaking over her.
How to support labor.
How to protect postpartum rest.
How to recognize warning signs.
How to participate in newborn care.
How to understand what SHE is physically and emotionally experiencing.

A doula shouldn’t have to replace an engaged father. We can help equip him.

Centering mothers and protecting maternal health does not require minimizing fatherhood. There is room to say Mom is the patient AND Dad is an important part of the support system.

Maybe instead of asking why some fathers don’t know how to show up, we should also be asking:

Who taught them how? 👀

Now Netflix, whenever y’all are ready… mic me up. 😂🎤

08/31/2026

Contrary to popular belief… simply bouncing or jumping up and down isn’t the same thing as intentionally creating movement and space within the pelvis. 👀

In labor, we want to move with purpose.

Pelvic tilts, hip circles, rocking, asymmetrical positions and position changes encourage pelvic mobility and can help baby navigate through the pelvis.

It’s not about doing the MOST. It’s about understanding what your body is doing and why. 🙌🏽

This is why childbirth education matters. I don’t just teach families what to do—I teach them the why behind it, so they can walk into birth informed, confident and prepared. 🤎

I had a moment recently where I realized I’m now booking well out between now and March 2027, and I just felt… grateful. 🥹💜

To every family who has trusted me to enter such a sacred and vulnerable season of your life… thank you.

I don’t think my families realize how much they have changed me. Every birth, every postpartum visit, every late-night text, every laugh, every hard moment, every baby I’ve had the privilege of loving on has taught me something and made me a better doula, advocate, mother, and woman.

I remember your babies. I remember your stories. I am impacted by your pain. I remember the moments when you trusted me to simply sit beside you and be part of your village.

As Sincerely, The Village Doula continues to grow, I never want growth to make this work feel transactional. Families are the heart of what I do.

Thank you for choosing me. Thank you for referring me. Thank you for telling other families about me. And most importantly, thank you for allowing me to be part of your village. 💜

Every family I serve leaves something with me, too. I have never forgotten you, even if our work together was years ago.

You changed me. I am not the same doula I was when I first started.

With so much love,
Akaila
