Wilkes Univ. Environmental Science and Geology Alumni assisted Dr. Matt Finkenbinder with a sediment coring demonstration for the Nuangola Lake Association. A 4-meter long sediment core was collected from the Nuangola Bog located in Mountaintop, Pennsylvania. Pollen, fossils and other characteristics of the sediment will be used to describe the past climate of northeastern Pennsylvania over the last 5,000 years. Thank-you Wilkes Alumni for helping with this demonstration!

Environmental Science and Environmental Studies students, Leaf Hancuff and Dylan Kiwak along with Professor Julie McMonagle expand the pollinator gardens outside of the Cohen Science Center! Plants were grown by Leaf in the greenhouse on the roof of the Cohen Science Center and in Professor McMonagle's home garden. The gardens were initially planted in the spring of 2025 and provide habitat and food for many pollinator species. Students learn about the important connection between food production and pollinators such as bees and butterflies in their Introduction to Environmental Science course. Students then participate in hand-on-experiences such as the planting done by Dylan and Leaf this summer. Great work Dylan and Leaf!

Dylan Kiwak, majoring in both in Environmental Studies and Digital Design and Media Art is putting his skills to use at his internship with the North Branch Land Trust in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Dylan is designing social media graphics that focus on the wildlife in the lands preserved by the Trust. Dylan is also designing graphics for community events and activities that the Trust hosts. as well as posters and merchandise that highlight the sanctuaries. Over the summer, Dylan is also mapping trails and monitoring preserved areas. Way to go Dylan!

Wilkes 2026 Environmental Science graduate, Anneke Bouma is beginning her career with Penske Truck Leasing. Anneke will oversee the collection and management of environmental data related to storage tanks, air quality monitoring, wastewater, stormwater and hazardous waste. Congratulations Anneke!

Reagan Weldon Peri, 2026 Graduate with a degree in Geology begins her career as a Project Geologist at Kimley-Horn and Associates in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. Her work will focus on soil and groundwater investigations and remediation. Congrats Reagan!

Caleb Edwards, 2026 Wilkes Univ. graduate with double majors in Environmental Science and Biology will begin a Biology PhD program at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada this fall. Congratulations Caleb!

The Biology and Earth Systems Science Department recently hosted 100 high school and middle school students, families and teachers for Earth and Environmental Science Day! Students spent the day exploring science though hands-on laboratory experiments. A Wilkes Environmental Studies Senior gave the opening address to the event attendees!
