✅ Doctoral Student
You’re admitted and taking courses!
📣 Say: “I’m a doctoral student at Wilkes University.”
❌ Not yet a candidate or doctor!

✅ Doctoral Candidate
Coursework is done, proposal defended, research in progress.
📣 Say: “I’m a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership.”
❌ Still not “Dr.” yet!

✅ Doctor!
Dissertation defended + degree conferred.
📣 Say: “Dr. Judy Smith” OR “Judy Smith, Ed.D.”
❌ Never use Dr. Judy Smith, Ed.D. (never both)

Your title changes, but your commitment to scholarship and leadership is constant. 💪

As we prepare to begin, remember that you are never navigating this journey alone. Reach out to your mentor, Pam, or Marcia with program questions. Your coursework will become available just prior to the start of classes, and beginning September 7, your teaching faculty will be ready to support you with course-specific questions.

The countdown is on! Monday, September 7, marks the beginning of the Fall 2026 semester for the Wilkes University Ed.D. program!

To our returning doctoral students—welcome back! You continue a journey that asks you to think deeply, challenge assumptions, connect scholarship to practice, and grow into the leader you are becoming.

To those new to our community—welcome to where leaders gather. 🌎 You are part of a community of scholar-practitioners who learn with and from one another across schools, organizations, communities, and across the globe.

As we prepare to begin, remember that you are never navigating this journey alone. Reach out to your mentor, Pam, or Marcia with any questions about the program. Look for your coursework to become available just prior to the start of classes, and once the semester officially begins on September 7, please reach out directly to your teaching faculty with course-specific questions.

This semester will bring new ideas, new challenges, new relationships, and new opportunities to make a difference. Lean into the learning. Ask the difficult questions. Support one another. Embrace the moments that stretch you. And remember that this journey is about more than earning a doctorate—it is about discovering how your leadership can positively influence the people and systems around you.

🎉 Congratulations, Dr. Maranda Wilkinson! 💙💛
There is something especially meaningful about seeing scholarship come to life in the places where our graduates lead.
These two photos appeared in the National Medal of Honor Museum, where Dr. Maranda Wilkinson serves as Director of Education—a wonderful reminder of the impact of her work and leadership beyond the dissertation.
On August 10, Dr. Wilkinson successfully defended her dissertation, Connecting to Place: The Impact of Place-Based Education on Immigrant Youth Populations, marking an extraordinary milestone in her Wilkes Ed.D. journey. Her qualitative research explores how place-based education can create meaningful connections for immigrant youth—strengthening the relationship between place, identity, learning, and belonging.
Today, we see that commitment reflected in her work as an educational leader and scholar-practitioner. From her research on place-based education to her leadership in museum education, Dr. Wilkinson demonstrates what it means to connect scholarship with practice and use education to help others understand place, history, identity, and one another. 🌎
