Something we never expected to deal with.🚩

I wanted to share the experience our son had with botulism and his horses. What happened opened our eyes to something we knew very little about, and we felt it was important to share our experience with other horse owners.

His daughter’s top rodeo horses were eating from a round bale that had a net around it and was in a feeder. Two of the horses laid down and never got back up. They were able to get the third horse to the veterinarian, where she was given an infusion to try to save her life. They weren’t sure if she had been exposed to botulism, but they gave her the infusion just in case she had ingested it.

Thankfully, she survived the botulism, but she is currently not eating because the infusion caused liver damage. The veterinarians believe she is going to be okay.

This experience opened our eyes to how often botulism can affect horses. We also learned that there is a vaccination available for botulism. We vaccinated all of our horses after this experience. We purchased the vaccine through Valley Vet, and it was about $20 per shot. It requires three shots, given about a month apart.

After what happened, we feel the cost of the vaccination is worth it. Unfortunately, our son has never been able to determine exactly where the botulism came from.

Botulism can potentially be found in a number of places, including:
• A dead animal in the hay
• Soil, especially when hay becomes contaminated with mud
• Birds that may contaminate hay

We’ve learned just how serious botulism can be and how important it is to be aware of the risks.

We wanted to share our experience because we certainly didn’t know as much about botulism as we wish we had before this happened. If sharing our story helps another horse owner learn about the risks and talk with their veterinarian about prevention, then it’s worth sharing.

You can help your horse learn how to collect before you ever get in the saddle. 🐴

In this session, Gene is working with this mare to help her understand what is being asked and continue building toward the collection he is looking for. One of the tools he prefers to use is a rope because it allows him to reach out and ask the horse to move when needed.

By staying back toward the hip, having life in your body, and asking the horse to move forward, you can help develop more collected movement.

Stay tuned for the next part, where he tightens the bungees a little more to help with better collection.

Bitting a horse up is one of the simplest ways to help a horse begin learning collection and to break at the poll. But like many training techniques, how you do it matters.

In this video, Gene explains the purpose behind bitting a horse up, demonstrates the correct setup, and shares a common mistake that can limit its effectiveness. He also talks about why he prefers using bungee cords over reins.
