Just when I said the farm was not that exciting lately we welcomed a beautiful new litter this AM. I knew Meishan piglets were arriving SOON and I’m so glad momma welcomed them on a sunny day. Momma and piglets are doing great in grasses taller than myself (5’10”). I heard them so I knew to go looking. I found them in a beautiful natural nest of our pastured grasses mounded with dirt. I of course didn’t have my phone on me so no precious pictures of new life. I assure you I will get some later. I’m going to let momma and babies do their thing. New life means new growth and as a farm we’re blessed to have the litters and the community that can support the litters. We put ourselves and our farm out there and our community welcomed us with open arms into their world to serve their family. Because of that our farm can proudly welcome new life and growth into our program to meet our families needs and the needs of our community.

*I will get a pic soon. SueLetta is going to be farrowing soon too!

Well, we’ve been a bit quiet over here enjoying the peace before the chaos.

Blessed to have the peace for sure and blessed to have the moments of silence.

We’ve really got so much going on over here behind the scenes and it’s all GREAT things! We have some really big projects in the works and we are so hopeful they pan out, but it’s nothing like chasing gilts off the neighboring properties or setting up motion cameras where I’m yelling at a fox so not much to be mentioning on Facebook. We’re just doing what you’re all doing…working! Working at this thing called life being no better at it than most of you. We’re enjoying our family and the blessings we’ve been given and opportunities that come about like you all are so not much to put out there for the world to see.

I NEED to do the cruddy part of my job and get online and get more of our product online, but we are once again selling out of so much because my community is the best. Sorry to everyone else who didn’t get to claim this community as their community.

We have our last few markets for the season wrapping up in Fredericksburg. That will be a bit of a bummer, but will also be a nice to have Wednesday evenings back for a bit and it’s coming at a convenient time as we’re low on so much of our stock for about another month when we will send off more for our farm to table customers.

As we get ready to go into the slower season (slow in VA because it gets cold) we will remind everyone that we offer local delivery and you can always find our goodies plus so much more Twisted Carrot Farm and Market
If you want your HOT or MILD Asian spiced brats go get them from Twisted Carrots while you can. Packed with garlic 🧄, Lemongrass 🌿, Thai peppers 🌶️, and so many other spices (NO SUGAR) they have the hot 🥵 and the mild. The mild ones my kids enjoy. Once these are gone they won’t return for a few months as we will bring in new flavors and we’re working on more flavors that you will ONLY find from Pig Wing Farms. The flavor lab is in full force!

Don’t forget your Peaches 🍑 and Thyme 🌿 syrup. These flavors are seasonal and we’re getting ready to roll out some fall favorites again!

Let’s go Friday!!! You have arrived in style. Today we had the pleasure of telling some of our younger Meishan gilts that they didn’t need the company of our beautiful boars. We had to let them know that they are too young to be mommas and that we can’t feed out any unexpected litters at this time so we reminded them to wait…hold out, don’t be that gilt. I honestly think the biggest con to the breed is dealing with these young momma wanna be’s.
Installed a new gate to help ensure the ladies stay with the ladies.

After that fun and feeding/watering this AM I showered up and started in on the culinary delights of farming. Carrying on with 🍑 theme we’re ready for market with all that Meishan goodness.

It’s the stickers that were supposed to arrive YESTERDAY! All of my labels were delayed a day. 🤦🏻‍♀️ along with the rest of my order. These are officially labeled so there’s no denying the heat packed in these Meishan brats. A flavor you will ONLY find at Pig Wing Farms.

We just got the hot in stock and the mild are almost out of stock…oh no!!!!

And just like that…bam💥Introducing Peaches 🍑 & Thyme 🌿 for a limited time. You found it here! Farm grown goodness!

As we prepare some farm to table orders to be delivered today (we will be out this afternoon delivering and this evening) we are also prepping for our markets this week as well as trying to unpack some boxes and get settled. It’s a busy one for sure.

I think you all know I love the waste not want not mindset. What does that mean for my farm, it primarily means we want to use/honor as much of our animals as possible. I just saw a reel yesterday of a husband/wife going “home” to help save their parents cattle operation. The goal was to grow a tallow skin care line into a 5 million dollar operation to buy more land. In the reel it stated they used to discard the fat from their beef. In my mind I thought wait, what, why??? This woman appeared to be around the same age as me. I too grew up on a cattle farm. I also grew up with the mindset that we use all we can. I realized her parents and grandparents failed at something if they were just now coming to the realization that you could and should use the fats from these animals. Once before it was the healthy standard (actually still is). Then along came marketing and advertising and companies needing a place for their byproducts.

These farms were throwing out/discarding valuable, edible, healthier food options all because someone paid for a good marketing company that makes a catchy jingle or a pretty label that caught your eye for a less nutritious and less tasty option. Seems silly that this couple would need to rethink the family farm business plan just to save it with something they had all along and with uses that have been around for centuries. Not old family secrets or new uses. This was the stuff that always worked for us and always benefited us.

We won’t try a catchy jingle. We try hard not to spend unnecessary money on pretty packaging. We won’t try to offload something we feel isn’t good enough for our most valued customers (our kids). Instead, we will bring you what we want for our family, for our friends, and what we believe is best for our farm and our animals and our community. When we can’t/won’t/don’t grow it, we will refer you to the person who can and will do it to the standards we appreciate and value and the people we enjoy working with ourselves. None of us are going to do it all. It takes a community to do it right. A community working together.

*our home smells AMAZING today as we’re cooking up some peaches grown from The Country Basket at Sunny Slope Orchard. I LOVE all of their goodies.
