π§ β¨ Sensory dysregulation is not bad behaviorβit's communication.
Some children experience the world more intensely and may respond by covering their ears π, seeking movement π, avoiding certain textures β, chewing on objects π¦·, or having big emotions π’.
π‘ How can we help? β’ Offer movement breaks πΆ β’ Create a calm space πΏ β’ Use sensory tools π§ β’ Maintain predictable routines π
β’ Teach coping skills π
When we respond with patience, understanding, and support β€οΈ, children feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn.

βοΈ Summer Safety Starts with Connection βοΈ
At South Central Mental Health Early Intervention Centers, summer learning is about more than just funβitβs also about helping children build important safety skills through meaningful experiences and strong relationships.
Throughout the summer, our preschool classrooms are incorporating age-appropriate summer safety lessons into daily activities, including:
π§ Water safety
βοΈ Sun safety
π² Outdoor and playground safety
π Car and parking lot safety
π« Safe choices in the community
Using Conscious Discipline principles, we focus on teaching children through connection, modeling, and problem-solving rather than fear or punishment. When children feel safe, connected, and supported, they are more likely to learn and apply important safety skills in everyday situations.
Our goal is to create learning experiences that are engaging, hands-on, and developmentally appropriate while strengthening emotional regulation, communication, and decision-making skills.
Because summer memories should be filled with fun, confidence, and safe adventures. π

Toddler meltdowns can be overwhelming, for children and adults alike. During these moments, our children aren't giving us a hard time; they're having a hard time. Their emotions can feel bigger than the skills they have to manage them.
One of the most powerful things we can offer is our calm. By staying close, lowering our voice, and lending them our regulation, we help them feel safe enough to move through those big feelings.
β¨ Connect before you correct.
Instead of focusing on the behavior first, focus on the child behind the behavior.
Try compassionate language such as:
π "I'm right here with you."
π "You're having a really hard time."
π "I won't let you hurt me or yourself."
π "I'll give you space and stay close."
π "That was a big feeling. Next time, let's try again together."
Remember: connection teaches, calm helps, and children grow when they feel understood. Your presence matters more than perfection. Keep showing up with love, you are making a difference. π

If our Early Intervention Center has made a positive impact on your child or family, we would love to hear your story. Your experience may help another family feel supported enough to take the first step toward getting help for their child. π
Whether your child has graduated or is still currently enrolled in our program, your words matter more than you know.
