Before the end of school, Jamie Parks’ first grade class wrote and illustrated a book titled “On a Safari Morning.” Each student picked a safari animal to draw and write about. They practiced their handwriting, storytelling, grammar and sentence structure skills.
This book is a product of class collaboration and creativity. The cover features all of their animals, made out of the students’ fingerprints, recognizing each student’s unique contributions.
Jamie Parks has led this project every year since starting at Derby. These wonderful books, made by our very own Oaklawn cheetahs, can be viewed in the school’s media center.

Yesterday, Mrs. Osborn officially said goodbye and introduced our new principal, Ms. Katherine Smith. While we are sad to see Mrs. Osborn go, we are so grateful for the time we had with her as our principal and for the impact she made on our school community. We are also excited to welcome Ms. Smith and look forward to the upcoming school year under her leadership.
Here are a few pictures from last night’s “Passing the Crown” event. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate this special occasion and support both of these incredible leaders.
