WSU Heskett Center
Everyone is welcome, for all genders.
And upcycling!🪡🧵
Conservation + Conversation =
Performance Art
♻️
Join Assistant Professor of Dance Megan Bascom and local slow-fashion advocate, Owner of TISSU Sewing Studio, Nina Winter, for an evening of dance, conversation, and sustainable community action on Friday, August 28 at 6:00 p.m. in Dance Studio 144B at the WSU Heskett Center. This free event explores alternatives to fast fashion through performance, discussion, and sharing. Attendees are encouraged to bring gently used clothing items to swap, exchange, or reimagine through upcycling. The evening begins with a performance of Fabricated Need – a dance examining the fast-fashion industry and its impacts, followed by a community discussion and clothing swap. By combining artistic expression, dialogue, and sustainable action, the event encourages participants to consider their relationship to clothing while engaging in a practical alternative to disposal and excess. This project is made possible by support from the Wichita State University Award for Research/Creative Projects in Summer 2026.

River designing a few Japanese-inspired outfits.🤩 An avant garde outfit for Tokyo held together with safety pins as an accessory & a traditional Kimono top for Kyoto (we love visualizing & writing down our dreams in detail😍). Come to think of it, River's past projects throughout the years were always inspired by Japan!😮

"EUROPE"
This week we traveled around the world & designed/sewed an outfit inspired by our dream destinations. We learned fancy words such as Haute Couture, Avant Garde, Tissu & also practiced our cursive. Most importantly, acknowledging & giving credit to cultures, customs, textiles & traditions that inspired our work. The best part! Using our IMAGINATION to visualize travel & fashion dreams coming to life!✨️

From Kimono Cardigans to the Classic Button-down to Sustainable Fashion to Craftivism, everyone's doing a 🤩🤩🤩 job!
We're learning how to sew, but most importantly, how to use our imagination, intuition & creative problem-solving skills to see a project through from conception to completion (with tons of struggles along the way = the sewing machine). If we can solve complex issues (the sewing machine😆) at this age, imagine what we can accomplish in the real world. From excelling at school, our mindset, following our passions & dreams to solving/saving the environment (and humanity) for future generations, one stitch at a time.♻️
