Happy Hispanic Heritage Month from the Friends University Latino Leadership Program!

This month celebrates and honors history, culture, and contribution of Hispanic and Latino communities in the U.S and around the world. It began as a week in 1968 and later expanded as a month in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan.

It also recognizes the independence of 8 Latin American Countries.
September 15: El Salvador 🇸🇻, Honduras 🇭🇳, Costa Rica 🇨🇷, Guatemala 🇬🇹, Nicaragua 🇳🇮
September 16: Mexico 🇲🇽
September 18: Chile 🇨🇱
September 21: Belize 🇧🇿

Fun fact: Hispanic Americans have seen the fastest growth in advanced degrees of any major racial or ethnic group!

Introducing 2026 Latino Leadership member, Jeremiah Olguin! Jeremiah is a freshman here at Friends University majoring in History & Political Science. Jeremiah is from Phoenix, Arizona and graduated from Wichita South High School. Apart from being in Latino Leadership, Jeremiah also serves as Senator at Large for our STUCO and plays the cello for the Friends Community Symphony & Chamber Orchestra. A highlight for Jeremiah this year has been the game show night hosted during new student orientation. When he graduates he plans on having a career in public policy and International Affairs, potentially working for Mexico’s diplomatic or consular service in the United States. A fun fact about Jeremiah is that he loves public speaking but is terrible at small talk. Jeremiah is a bright and dedicated individual. We are lucky to have him in our familia!
