Step 1: Build the foundation. š§±
Before the seed goes in the ground, we focus on the soil.
A pre-plant carbon and biological application can help activate microbial activity, improve nutrient cycling, and create an environment where roots can establish quickly. This application can be especially useful after a fallow period.
Healthy soil isnāt built overnight, and neither is a high-performing wheat crop. Start with the soil. The crop will follow.

Last week we were out in Alma, KS for the Enhancing Soil Health in Native Grass and Cropland field day. Tour stops covered everything from native grass production and quality, to cover crop seed production, dual cropping with soybeans and rye, and cattle collar technology for rotational grazing.
These on-farm events are some of the best ways to see soil health principles playing out in real operations, and this one did not disappoint.

Weeds donāt show up randomly, they grow where conditions invite them.
That same species coming back in the same area every year is telling you something specific about whatās going on in that soil. Could be compaction. Could be a pH problem. Could be disrupted biology or a nutrient deficiency that keeps creating the right environment for that plant to thrive.
Spraying takes care of the symptom, but reading the field first gets to the root of whatās actually going on.

Can you spot the difference? š
This central Kansas farmer drilled humates with a portion of his newly planted alfalfa. The rest went in without. Once the crop started emerging, the treated acres spoke for themselves!
Itās easy to focus on fertility when chasing a good stand, but getting the foundational things right, like the C:N ratio in your soil, matters just as much. Carbon is what gives your biology a home. Without it, nitrogen has nowhere to go.
Humates can help move that C:N ratio in the right direction. This field is showing you exactly what that looks like when some acres get closer to that balance while others do not.

Cytokinins, the hormones that promote cell division and keep your crop in a growth-forward posture, are produced in root tips.
Which means a compromised root system isnāt just a water and nutrient problem. Itās a hormonal one.
A root system dealing with compaction, low biological activity, or anaerobic zones is sending different signals to the rest of the plant than one thatās healthy and active. Those signals determine things like stomatal behavior, ear set, grain fill duration, which all impact productivity.
