While doing regular upkeep on the American Indian collections housed within the OHS, a curator discovered something that had been forgotten for many years. Stored on one of the shelving units was a rolled canvas tipi from 1916 that no one had seen for many decades. This tipi is known as the Tipi with Battle Pictures. The tradition and history embodied by this tipi can be traced to 1833 when Little Bluff became the sole leader of the Kiowa people. The Tipi with Battle Pictures also figures prominently in another recent OHS venture: the recent acquisition and conservation of the 1920 silent film “Daughter of Dawn.” In fact, the tipi was authenticated using photographic stills from the movie.
This tipi is now on display at the Oklahoma History Center as part of its newest exhibit, “Jṑqī́gácút: Tipi With Battle Pictures.”

Adoptees can have an even more difficult time proving their Indian ancestry. DNA is not accepted as proof of Indian ancestry. (There are many reasons for this and I will discuss those in another post.) Citizenship requires that an adoptee be able to prove Indian ancestry through their biological ancestors. This means unsealing the adoption records, which may or may not require a lawyer and a court order, depending upon the state. The state of Kansas does require a court order, but the state of Colorado, in the cases of the deceased, only require birth/death certificates proving descent and the appropriate paperwork to be filled out. Each state is different and you must check with that state. Before taking that step, it's very important to make sure that you locate the state and county that the adoption took place in first. Once you have those papers in hand, then you can proceed with enrollment.
