"Lift Every Voice and Sing" arr. by Bob Phillips performed by members of the Combined SEHS Concert, Symphonic, and Chamber Orchestras at their End of Year Concert on May 10, 2021. Thank you for performing this important piece with such emotion and sensitivity!

Lift Every Voice and Sing was a poem written by James Welden Johnson in 1899 and was set to music by his brother J. Rosamond Johnson in 1900. It became known as the African American National Anthem. The first performance of the poem was in honor of Booker T. Washington's visit to the segregated Stanton school on Abraham Lincoln's birthday on February 12, 1900 where J. Rosamond Johnson served as principal.

Lift every voice and sing
Till earth and heaven ring
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun
Let us march on till victory is won
