General Contractor Exam: Meet Coach Kev AI, Your Study Partner at 10 PM

I can't be in every study room. So I built one that can.

Coach Kev AI runs live study rooms for the general contractor exam. Say "Coach, I'm ready" and he starts the round. Say "Coach, hold on" and he pauses the clock. Stuck? He breaks the question down and shows you where it lives in the code book. And when the real Coach Kev walks in, he hands the room over.

Principles and Practices of Commercial Construction: The Book Most People Skip

There is a book in your stack that most people never open, and I would put money on it showing up on your exam.

Principles and Practices of Commercial Construction. In this cut from our live GC exam class I go chapter by chapter through what is actually in it, and why skipping it is the wrong call.

What's in it:
• What lives in each chapter, in plain language, so you know what the book is for
• Why chapter one reads like filler and the rest of it does not
• How this book overlaps with the questions you are already missing
• Memorize your chapters, not the answers — and work the index with the end in mind

The line from the class I will stand on: I have never met one person who passed because they highlighted the right answers. They passed because they highlighted the right sections.

Reading the Bulletin: What Category Does Roofing Fall In? | GC Exam Live Class

Somebody asked me how worried they should be about roofing questions. Fair question. Wrong way to ask it.

The right way is: pull the bulletin, find which category roofing falls under, and see how many questions that category is worth.

In this cut from our live GC exam class:
• Walking the category list — general requirements, site construction, masonry, metal, concrete, wood, thermal
• Where roofing actually lands and why that changes how much time it deserves
• Systems versus trades, and why a roof is a system and concrete is a trade
• Using your license path to pull the right bulletin instead of guessing

The part that bothers me: a GC is not a roofer. You are not being tested on whether you can hang a roof. You are being tested on whether you can find what the code says about one. Those are different skills and people study the wrong one.

Table of Contents or Index? Looking Up Asphalt Shingles | GC Exam Live Class

Open book does not mean easy. It means you have three minutes to find something in a book you did not write.

"When installing asphalt shingles, shingling up the rakes followed by shingling across the roof is known as blank."

In this cut from our live GC exam class:
• Table of contents versus index, and which one you reach for first
• Why the index sends you to four page numbers and the table of contents sends you to one section
• Pulling main keywords apart from supporting keywords before you open anything
• What to do when the book and the answer key disagree — and yes, that happened live

Here is the argument I will have with anybody: the index is where people go to feel productive, and the table of contents is where people go to actually categorize the question. Fight me in the comments.

Roofing Book Basics: Underlayment, Drip Edge and Nail Spacing | GC Exam Live Class

Two houses, same street, same roof, same year. A tropical storm comes through with 70 mile an hour gusts. One drip edge is flapping and water is running behind the fascia. The other one does not move.

The difference was nail spacing. Six inches instead of ten.

In this cut from our live GC exam class we go through the roofing and construction book:
• Why the terminology in the book is not the terminology you use on the job
• Felt versus synthetic underlayment, and what regular felt does to plywood over time
• Drip edge, fastener spacing, and the reason the number is the number
• Checking the framing before the sheathing goes down

Most guys reading this have run roofs for years and would still miss the book question, because the book asks it in language nobody uses on a jobsite. That gap is the whole exam.

Vertical Front Wall Flashing: How Far Up the Wall? | GC Exam Live Class

"Vertical front wall flashing should extend up the wall a minimum of blank inches." Three, four, five or six?

I worked this one live with the class and I got it wrong. On camera. Then we went back and found out exactly why.

What's in it:
• Pulling the keywords out first — flashing is the main one, vertical and wall are the supporting ones
• What happens when the index gives you three page numbers and you pick the wrong one to open first
• Reading the figure instead of the paragraph, and why the number you want is sometimes only in the drawing
• Why the answer being "right" in the book and "right" on the exam are two different arguments

The reason I left my wrong answer in is that this is the part nobody shows you. Everybody posts the clean version where they knew it cold. That is not what the exam feels like.

Naming Your Business: Trademark, Service Mark and the Trick in the Question

"Blank is relatively unimportant when naming a business." Impression of the firm? Trademark? Service? Location?

Three of those four are sitting right there in the first paragraph of the section. That's the trick.

In this short cut from our live GC exam class:
• Finding the section — choosing a business structure, naming your business
• Reading the paragraph and watching it hand you three of the four answers as important
• What's left is the answer, and you never had to know it cold
• Trademark vs service mark, and why the exam cares about the difference

Two and a half minutes. This is what "read it slow enough to see what they did" looks like.

Highlighting Your Books: The System That Narrows It Down | GC Exam Live Class

If you highlighted the whole page, you highlighted nothing. Ask anybody who has actually sat the exam.

In this cut from our live GC exam class:
• Why the table of contents is a categorizing tool, not a lookup tool
• Reading the dark marks — the bold headers are your key categories
• Highlighting the questions you work, not just the sections in the highlighting guide
• A reading plan for people who don't read: part one in one sitting, not the whole book
• Habit vs routine, and why the method has to be the habit

Here's the honest part from the class: Kev didn't know the answer cold either. He flipped, he read the dark marks, he found it. That's the skill. Nobody remembers all 24 books.

We run these live every week inside Study Buddy Pro, and every one gets recorded so you can come back to it.
