Selma Burke was a pioneering artist whose work left a lasting mark on American culture and public art. Best known for her powerful sculptures and portraits, Burke was an influential figure of the Harlem Renaissance, a period when Black artists, writers, and thinkers reshaped American art and intellectual life.
In the late 1930s, Burke created a bas-relief portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt after winning a national competition sponsored by the Fine Arts Commission. Her sculpture was installed at the Recorder of Deeds Building in Washington, D.C., where it remains today.
Years later, when the United States dime was redesigned following Roosevelt’s death in 1945, many observers noticed a striking resemblance between Burke’s sculpture and the profile used on the coin. Because of this similarity, some historians and art scholars believe her bas-relief portrait may have influenced the design of the Roosevelt dime.
The dime itself was officially designed by John R. Sinnock, whose initials appear on the coin. While the exact extent of Burke’s influence on the coin’s design has long been debated, her work undeniably stands as one of the most recognizable sculptural portraits of President Roosevelt.
Beyond this famous connection, Selma Burke’s artistic legacy is extensive. She taught art for many years, helped mentor younger artists, and founded the Selma Burke School of Art in New York City, where she encouraged students to develop their own creative voices.
