Come spend part of your Saturday with us at the Indigenous Peoples’ Day & Trail of Tears Memorial Walk at the Mid-America All-Indian Museum from 10:00am–1:00pm. Be sure to stop by the WPS Native American Program and NAPAC tables to say hello, grab some resources, and make a craft!

The morning will include:
- A reading of the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Proclamation
- An Honor Walk around the museum grounds
- Intertribal round dancing following the walk
- Educational materials about Native American Boarding Schools and the Trail of Tears
- A hands-on craft provided by the Native American Parent Advisory Committee (NAPAC)
- Community resource tables, including Hunter Health Clinic, offering flu shots and other resources
- Indian Tacos available for purchase from the Wichita Indian Methodist Church

We’d love to see you there! Bring your family, bring a friend, and join us as we honor, remember, learn, and celebrate together. Free and open to everyone!

🚗 Parking Information
Due to road closures for a community parade, all attendees must park at Exploration Place and enter the museum through the back entrance. The Seneca Street Bridge will be completely closed, so please plan accordingly and allow a little extra time to get to the event.

🧡 Wear Orange Tomorrow - September 30th! 🧡

September 30th is the National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding School Survivors, a time to honor the children who never returned home and the survivors, families, and communities impacted by the Indian boarding school era.

During Orange Shirt Week, communities across the country and Canada come together to acknowledge the lives of children who never returned home, honor the strength of survivors and descendants, and recognize the ongoing impacts of federal Indian boarding school policies on Indigenous communities and beyond.

There are many ways to take action and help keep this important history remembered:
🧡 Wear orange on September 30th
📚 Learn about the history of the Indian boarding school era
👂 Listen to survivors and their stories
💬 Talk with others about what you learn

Every action helps ensure the stories of survivors are remembered and that communities continue moving toward truth and healing.

Tomorrow, we invite you to wear orange with us as we honor the past, support survivors, and build a future rooted in understanding, respect, and healing.

Super Saturday is THIS Saturday! 🧡

From 10:00–11:30am we’ll spend some time learning about the history and meaning of Orange Shirt Day/Every Child Matters, then students will get to make their own orange shirts by adding their handprints to our Every Child Matters design. We’ll also have a couple of other small activities for students to enjoy along the way.

Then, from 11:30am–1:00pm, we’re sticking around for our first Family Learning Lab!📚

No school for any 9 a.m. start WPS elementary schools today, Wednesday, Sept. 16, due to the boil water advisory. Students at latchkey at these schools will need to be picked up as soon as possible.

Determinations about Sept. 17 and after-school events will be made when more information is available.

Schools that are already in session and 9 a.m. secondary start schools will continue as normal.

****Update: Afternoon Pre-K for schools that start at 8 a.m. is canceled for today.

***Update: All after-school programs, activities and athletic practices on WPS property are canceled for today, Wednesday, Sept 16. Athletic events that are hosted out-of-district will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

We enjoyed visiting the Mayberry Cultural and Fine Arts Magnet Middle School Native American Studies class and sharing some of our replica artifacts with students!

After recently learning about how Native peoples of the Plains utilized the buffalo, it was great to bring that learning to life through hands-on examples and conversation.
