What a great night at the Kansas Teacher of the Year banquet! We got to celebrate two outstanding TAP students, Kevin Nicholls and Danielle Blue, who were honored as our WSU Teachers of Promise. Added bonus: TAP mentor teachers and instructors Sue Rippe and Deanna Deutscher were there celebrating as well. Great night all the way around! 💛🖤🌾

TAP™ was created with working school professionals in mind. Clinical experiences are integrated throughout the program so that TAP candidates can continue working in schools while completing their coursework.

Jaime tells us that her boss was the one who first encouraged her to go back to school, and she hasn’t looked back since. Thanks to the support of her husband, children, and fellow teachers she has achieved her goal of becoming a special education teacher. “Now that I’ve reached that goal, my next milestone is graduating with a 3.8 GPA.” In achieving balance between life and school, Jaime picks one day a week where the computer doesn’t even get opened. “The night is for my family and not homework.”

As a student in Wichita State University’s Teacher Apprentice Program, Jessica can balance her degree journey with caring for her family, especially her daughter with cerebral palsy. “Keeping up on schoolwork” is important, Jessica says. “If you wait until the last minute it becomes very overwhelming.” On going back to school, she tells us “You can do it. You just have to take the first leap.”

Great stories about our TAP students!Maddie Rust

Maddie has taken her experience as a para educator to aim for a degree in Elementary Education here at Wichita State University. Cheering on her journey is her husband and their four children. On balancing life and school, Maddie says “You need to make time for your children as well as your work. Don’t stress about school all the time, give the time you are spending with your children to your children.”
