Here is the information from Wichita Public Schools regarding the Student Personal Electronic Device Policy that is in place this school year in accordance with the state law (HB 2289). We will share further details on how the policy will be implemented at Coleman before the new school year begins.
ββββββββββββ
26-27 STUDENT PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY
Wichita Public Schools will implement a Personal Electronic Device Free Zone during the school day, beginning with the start of the 2026-2027 school year. π΅ This expectation applies to all instructional time, as well as passing periods and lunch periods. Technology that is issued by the school district for instructional purposes is not impacted by this policy.
π± PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Cell phones
- Tablets
- Personal computers
- Smartwatches
- Headphones or earbuds
- Smart glasses
βοΈ EXCEPTIONS:
Exceptions will be made for:
β’ Students who require a device as part of their Individualized Education Program (lEP) or 504 Plan.
β’ Students with a documented medical need, as approved by a physician.
π STORAGE:
Devices brought onto school premises must be powered off and stored in a secure location designated by the school, away from the students person. [More details on what this will look like at Coleman are coming soon.]
π COMMUNICATION:
Students who need to contact a parent or guardian during the school day may do so using a school phone.
π‘οΈ ENFORCEMENT:
β’ Students in violation of the policy will be required to surrender the device for storage and may retrieve the device at the end of the school day.
β’ Repeated violations may require a parent to retrieve the device.
β’ Any student who refuses to surrender their device shall be subiect to discipline according to the WPS Code of Conduct.
π€ We understand that this will be an adjustment for some students and families, and we appreciate your support and patience as we implement this change.
The purpose of this policy is to comply with HB 2299 and to provide a distraction-free learning environment that supports student focus, engagement, and academic success.

Coleman has TWO teachers participating in this grant program this year. It has been a great opportunity to focus on civics education alongside teachers from across the state.

JOIN THE CAN-PAIGN β Where recycling makes C-E-N-T-S! β»οΈ
Have you been past Coleman this week? If so, you may have seen the aluminum can collection trailer! Itβs located along Governeour Road near the north bus entrance. Already collecting aluminum cans? Bring your bags of cans to Coleman and put them in the trailer! Not gathering them at home yet? Start today and bring them by Coleman when youβre ready to!
The Summer Garden Program worked with Mr. Newingham to get the trailer ready to collect cans. They had fun painting and putting the finishing touches on it. The cans collected will be recycled and the money goes right back to our Nature Champions program and other environmentally focused activities at Coleman!
β»οΈ Coleman also oversees recycling of other items such as flat screen TVs, bicycles, washers, dryers, wire, computers, lawn mowers, and more! These items should not be dropped at the aluminum can spot, instead email Mr. Newingham to arrange getting the items to Coleman ([email protected]).
Thank you for supporting recycling efforts at Coleman! Weβre excited to continue our work to positively impact the world and environment!

The Coleman Summer Garden Program was featured during KWCHβs evening newscast. The story highlights the ways current and former Coleman students are learning about sustainability, caring for animals, growing food, collecting cans, and processing e-waste.
