YouTube is FULL of great tutorials, tips, and tricks, and just a great general resource when taking music lessons.

That being said, these resources are only helpful when they are properly applied, and should be used while taking music lessons

I get that many folks want a DIY solution to learning a musical instrument, but it doesn’t always help when you’re navigating bunch of different videos online with no real system or guidance.

YouTube is a great tool to use WITH music lessons, not a replacement for music lessons.

While it's always fun to learn a musical instrument, it's also important to remember that music is an art, and in art, making mistakes is half the fun of learning.

When you're watching your child learning to play, remember:

they're going to make mistakes.
they're going to play wrong notes.
they're going to use the wrong technique.

and they're going to hear me say "I want you to make mistakes."

Of course they give me an odd look and ask why I say that.

You see, music is one of the FEW spaces where we're safe to make mistakes, especially in a world where mistakes are not welcome.

In music, you get to mess up a measure and start again.
In music, you get to accidentally play in one key and sing in another.
In music, it's always one more time (until you finally nail that section!)

And yes, we strive to always do our best, and while it's nice to accomplish something the first time, that's not really conducive to learning.

The learning happens in the mistakes, the messy parts, and those spots where we start, fail, and start again.

Music allows us to make mistakes, in the best way possible.

This month, our PianoPLAY and GuitarPLAY classes are working on CHORDS. Do you happen to know your musical chords?

The notes in a chord can be arranged or any order and it will still be the same chord!

This is called positions, and for triads, we have three positions:
👉 Root Position
👉 1st Inversion
👉 2nd Inversion

So let’s take a look at positions in action in music theory. For a C Major chord, it would have these positions:

👉 Root: C-E-G
👉 1st Position: E-G-C
👉 2nd Position: G-C-E

Same three notes, just in a different order on the page.

These positions are from inverting the chords. Chord inversions are when we re-order the notes in the chord.

When a chord is inverted, we take the bottom note of the chord and move it up an octave.

Inverted chords still sound similar, but not exactly the same.

have you ever thought kids' piano lessons should be made just for kids?

think about it...if you see a kid in piano lessons, and an adult in piano lessons, do they look similar, or different?

same thing can be applied to a classroom as well.

Kids in elementary school may have a better time completing worksheets on the floor, while others are focused on a project, and others are seated on their tablets doing some work as well.

versus adult students in college are seated at desks or tables the entire class time.

Both learning in their environments, but it looks different

that's what sets us apart from other programs. our PianoPLAY classes are made with kids in mind.

you won't see kids sitting at their piano the entire time. they get up, they move around, they're focused on their tasks, learning new songs or concepts.

then at the end of each class, we have a group activity so our kiddos wrap up with a great experience that makes them excited to come week after week.
..the type of experience that makes you glad you enrolled them in our piano classes.

Tuesdays 4pm don't work. Texting a video at 4:42pm does work.

Wednesdays 6pm don't work. Recording a voice memo at 7:30am does work.

Saturdays 11am don't work. Reviewing notes and assignments at 11:53pm does work.

Asynchronous Music Lessons work when you need them to, not when you can squeeze them into your schedule.
