Wichita State University School of Social Work

Wichita State University School of Social Work We offer both Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) programs. The BSW is a Bachelor of Arts degree with a social work major.

The BSW program was initiated in 1967 and the MSW program in 1999. The School of Social Work is located on the beautifully landscaped, art adorned campus of Wichita State University. WSU's location in the city of Wichita in Sedgwick County, Kansas, offers a distinctive setting for social work education. A wide range of resources are available for student internships and practicum placements which compare very favorably to any social work program in Kansas. Our programs have interesting roots in the history of Wichita State University. The BSW program was initiated in 1967 by Edward H. Tuttle, who graduated from the municipal University of Wichita in 1934. His fierce devotion to social work and his legacy with our program is more than a simple memory of his contributions to community services. The MSW program was initiated in the Fall of 1999, approved by the Kansas Board of Regents. The BSW Program was accredited in 1974 by the Council on Social Work Education. In June 2003, the Council on Social Work Education gave the MSW program initial accreditation. Our programs both remain fully accredited. As part of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences our curriculum is designed to develop generalist and advanced generalist social workers for practice within the region and state. Most graduates work in the Wichita area. The BSW program's major objectives are to prepare students for direct professional practice, to prepare students for graduate social work education, and to educate for responsible community participation. The MSW program's major objective is the education of students for advanced generalist practice in social work. The advanced generalist is adept at direct service delivery with individuals, families, groups, and communities, and also has indirect practice capabilities in the areas of supervision, administration, program development, and evaluation.

Evan Shaheen, MSW, LAC, is a proud Wichita State University Social Work alumnus making a difference through their work in hospital administration and addiction counseling. Their commitment to supporting individuals affected by substance use challenges reflects the versatility and impact of the social work profession.

When asked what advice they would offer current students, Evan shared:
β€œDon't be afraid when you don't know the answer. That's part of learning in the field.”
Simple, yet powerful advice. Social work is a profession built on continuous learning, curiosity, and growth. The willingness to ask questions, seek guidance, and remain open to new knowledge helps shape effective and compassionate practitioners.

We are SHOCKER PROUD of Evan and all they have already accomplished as a social worker. We wish them continued success as they advance their career and continue making a positive impact in their community and beyond. πŸ’›πŸ–€

Kansans are invited to participate in Kansas Week Without Driving, taking place October 1-8, 2026. The statewide initiative raises awareness about the challenges faced by people who cannot drive due to age, disability, income, or other reasons, and highlights the importance of having safe, reliable, and accessible transportation options for everyone. Registration for Kansas Week Without Driving is available at www.ksrides.org.

During the week, participants commit to living without driving for at least one day, or the entire week, and instead rely on other ways of getting around such as public transit, biking, walking, carpooling, or ride services. By taking part, drivers can better understand the barriers many Kansans face each day and help spark conversations about building stronger mobility options across the state.
