Considered to be one of the founding fathers of Lindy Hop, Frankie Manning is a keystone figure in Swing Dance History. Not just a dancer, but an author, teacher, and Tony award winning choreographer, Manning began dancing in his childhood and did not stop until his passing at 94 years old in 2009. During his eight decade career he worked with prolific groups such as Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers, toured with legends such as Norma Miller, and he even executed the first ever aerial move in a swing dance competition in 1935. Frankie Manning was the human embodiment of what he wanted dance to become. He lived through this artistic medium, transforming swing dance as he went, unaware that, meanwhile, swing dance was transforming him into the man we remember him as today.
