Wichita Swing Dance Society

Billie Holiday, or “Lady Day,” was a renown Jazz and Swing musician known for being a trailblazer and advocate for civil rights as early as the 1930s, and single handedly altering Jazz history with her unique musical style. Over the course of her 30 year career she worked with legends such as Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson, Count Basie, and Artie Shaw. Her 1939 protest song “Strange Fruit” sold over a million copies nationwide. She was the recipient of four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of fame. In addition, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is cited saying that “Billie Holiday changed Jazz forever”. NPR named her as one of history’s 50 greatest voices, and, in 2023, The Rolling Stone Magazine listed her as the fourth greatest singer of all time. Holiday’s story teaches that, no matter the circumstances of one’s background or upbringing, it is always possible to do what you love and stand up for what is right.
