Last week, our College of Engineering Ambassadors enjoyed some quality time with the elementary kids at Mueller Aerospace and Engineering Discovery Magnet-USD 259. The ambassador leadership team upgraded the flight simulator and installed it at Mueller over the weekend. 🚀🛩️ Then we hosted a group of their 3rd-5th graders on campus for a Mars Rover activity & tour of our John Bardo Center!

We recently had the opportunity to attend the IEEE Region 5 Annual Conference in Boulder, Colorado📍. The Wichita State University IEEE Student Branch won the “Outstanding Small Student Chapter” Award, while Demy Alexander won the “Outstanding Young Professional” Award and Dr. John Watkins won the “Jim Leonard R5 Outstanding Member” Award👏. Various students participated in competitions, with Nirasha Bataduwa Arachchige winning first place in the 3MT Competition and a team comprised of Anthony Lam and Viet Nguyen winning first place in the Ethics Competition. Congratulations to all the winners🎉!

At the end of March, our National Society of Black Engineers - NSBE - Wichita State University student chapter took 24 members to the national NSBE Convention in Baltimore, Maryland📍. The convention was an amazing opportunity for our students to network and connect with peers and professionals🤝—they even got to meet our incoming dean, Dr. Ali P. Gordon🤩!

Over Spring Break, four students from our Engineers Without Borders student chapter traveled to Azacillo, Bolivia, taking the first steps toward helping the community secure reliable, year-round access to clean water👏. Andrew Beam, Thomas (TJ) Morrison, Emma Radford and Israel Torres were accompanied by Dr. Jacob Mendez and joined by Dwight Hanson, a professional engineer🤩. Awesome work, team🎉!

In addition to an award winner, several staff members were recently nominated for the WSU Staff Excellence Awards👏. The nominees—Shelby Berry (academic advisor), Katherine Brewster (academic advisor), Wendy Brooking (executive assistant), Jake Frazee (academic advisor), Leah Lamunyon (marketing and communications director), and Adriana Fraga Cintra Soares (academic advisor)—were recognized at last Friday’s Shocker STRIVE Conference🎉.
Additionally, Dr. Jacob Mendez, assistant dean of student success, has been nominated for the WSU President’s Award for Distinguished Service💚. Winners for that award have not yet been announced.
