Yesterday, the Maverick Battalion JROTC Color Guard proudly presented our Nation’s Colors at this school year’s volleyball game. Every time our Cadets carry Old Glory, they represent something greater than themselves—service, sacrifice, unity, and freedom.

Maverick Battalion Honors Women’s Equality & Leadership 🇺🇸
Leadership is strengthened when Cadets understand the sacrifices, determination, and courage of those who helped create opportunities for future generations. Learning about Women’s Equality gives our JROTC Cadets an opportunity to recognize the tremendous contributions women have made—and continue to make—as leaders in our military, government, education, business, communities, and families.
For our Cadets, this is more than a history lesson. It reinforces the Army Values of Respect, Honor, Integrity, and Selfless Service while teaching them that effective leadership is built on character, competence, opportunity, and the willingness to serve others.
The Memorial Maverick Battalion was truly honored to represent JROTC at this important event and to stand alongside members of our community in recognizing the achievements, leadership, and continued impact of women.

Leadership Education Has No Boundaries 🇺🇸

Wichita Falls ISD continues to demonstrate that leadership education and opportunity extend beyond the walls of a traditional classroom. Through Army JROTC, eligible homeschool students have an opportunity to become part of a team, develop confidence, strengthen character, and learn the values and responsibilities of leadership.

Today, Memorial Maverick JROTC Cadet Burford proudly represented the Memorial Maverick Battalion at the Sheppard Air Force Base Homeschool Open House. What makes her representation especially meaningful is that Cadet Burford is a homeschool student herself, currently participating and serving in the Memorial Maverick JROTC program.
Her presence today sends an important message to other homeschool students and families: leadership development is for everyone.

JROTC is about much more than wearing a uniform. It is about developing young people who understand responsibility, discipline, teamwork, citizenship, service, confidence, and accountability. Those lessons are just as valuable to a homeschool student as they are to any student attending school full-time.

We are proud that WFISD supports opportunities for homeschool students to participate in JROTC and experience the leadership education, mentorship, camaraderie, and sense of belonging that come with being part of the Maverick Battalion.

To all of the new Wichita Falls Memorial High School JROTC parents and families I had the privilege of meeting today during New Student Cadet Orientation—thank you.
Thank you for entrusting the Maverick Battalion with something far more valuable than a uniform, a grade, or a school activity—you have entrusted us with the leadership development of your most cherished possession: your son or daughter. That is a responsibility we do not take lightly.
Army JROTC is about much more than marching, uniforms, and military customs. Our mission is “To Motivate Young People to Be Better Citizens.” We will challenge your Cadets to develop character, confidence, discipline, responsibility, teamwork, resilience, and leadership—qualities that will serve them whether their future takes them to college, the workforce, military service, or wherever life leads them.
Parents, you are now an important part of our Maverick Battalion family. We ask for your support as we challenge your Cadets to step outside their comfort zones, accept responsibility, learn from mistakes, lead others, and discover just how much they are capable of accomplishing.

Just as a new teacher needs to know their principal, every new Maverick student Cadet needs to know the senior Cadet leaders responsible for leading this Battalion. Our LET 4s Senior Cadet Battalion Staff are the face of our Cadet leadership. New Cadets should see them, know them, trust them, and understand what they represent.
And LET 4s, understand the other side of that responsibility: those new Cadets are watching you. They're learning what JROTC is by watching what you do. Your uniform, attitude, discipline, accountability, communication, and how you treat the newest Cadet in the room are teaching leadership before you ever say a word.
Your student leadership responsibility isn't to make new Cadets become like you. It is to help them become better than they were when they walked through our Maverick Battalion doors. That's mentorship. That's leadership. That's how we build the Maverick Battalion.

Today we had a strong day two of school year 26/27 leadership-development event: every Battalion Staff introduced themselves and their position to the new Cadets, then deliberately assign themselves responsibility for mentoring and integrating those Cadets into the Maverick Battalion.

From the Army Instructors to the student Cadets today:

Welcome Back, Maverick Battalion!
MAVERICKS — WELCOME TO THE BATTALION!
Whether you are returning for another year or stepping into JROTC for the very first time, you are now part of something bigger than yourself. This year is about leadership, teamwork, discipline, confidence, service, and becoming the very best version of yourself.
To our tenured and returning Cadets: IT'S TIME TO STEP UP! You already know our standards, expectations, traditions, and what it means to represent the Maverick Battalion. Our new Cadets will be watching you from Day One. They will learn as much from what you do as from what you tell them.
Mentor them. Teach them. Encourage them. Include them.
Don't assume a new Cadet knows how we do things. Take the time to teach them the details — how to wear the uniform correctly, customs and courtesies, drill and ceremony, formations, accountability, teamwork, military bearing, classroom expectations, and how to conduct themselves as a member of the Maverick Battalion.
If they make a mistake, teach them.
If they're struggling, help them.
If they're standing alone, bring them into the team.
If they don't understand, show them the right way.
That's LEADERSHIP.
Rank doesn't make you a leader. A title doesn't make you a leader. Your actions, character, consistency, and willingness to take care of others do.
Every returning Cadet has a responsibility to help develop the next generation of Mavericks. Set the example ALWAYS — even when you think nobody is watching.
To our NEW CADETS: Welcome to the family! You don't have to know everything on Day One. Come ready to learn, work hard, challenge yourself, ask questions, and become part of the team. Give this program your best effort, and you may be surprised by the leader you discover within yourself.
We're going to train.
We're going to compete.
We're going to serve our community.
We're going to challenge ourselves.
We're going to build friendships.
We're going to develop LEADERS.

The Numbers Tell the Story.
Every year, thousands of exceptional young men and women dream of earning an appointment to the United States service academies. The statistics for the Class of 2030 Air Force Academy show just how selective that journey truly is.
Out of 10,970 applicants, only 1,124 earned appointments. For women, the competition was even more demanding. 3,330 women began the application process, yet only 274 ultimately received appointments—representing approximately 8% of the women who started the process.
Those selected were not average students. They were scholars, athletes, leaders, and individuals of exceptional character, with an average 3.89 GPA, outstanding SAT/ACT scores, and impressive records of leadership, athletics, and service.
That is why the Wichita Falls Memorial High School JROTC Maverick Battalion is so proud that our SY 2025–2026 Battalion Commander, Cadet Colonel Lorelei Mitchell, earned her place among this elite group.
Her accomplishment is a testament to years of hard work, discipline, resilience, and leadership—but it also reflects what we strive to develop every day within the Memorial JROTC program.
At Memorial JROTC, we don't simply teach students how to wear a uniform. We develop leaders of character. We challenge cadets to excel academically, lead with integrity, serve their communities, work as members of a team, and build the confidence to succeed wherever life leads them.
Whether our cadets attend a service academy, enlist in the Armed Forces, attend college, enter the workforce, or pursue technical careers, our mission remains the same:
To motivate young people to become better citizens and leaders for our nation.
Congratulations again to Cadet Colonel Lorelei Mitchell. Your achievement is not only a reflection of your dedication, but an inspiration to every current and future Maverick Cadet.

Parents know the struggle...

"So, what activity should my kid do?" 🤔

And suddenly you're comparing calendars, checking practice schedules, searching for missing uniforms, and wondering how one child somehow has enough energy for 47 different activities. 😂

The good news? There are a lot of amazing options for young people in our community.

Some kids want to explore the outdoors.
Some want to play sports.
Some want to perform.
Some want to build, create, compete, or serve.

Truly - That's awesome, because the goal isn't for every kid to do the exact same thing. The goal is for every young person to find a place where they can grow, make friends, learn new skills, and discover what they're capable of.

We're proud of Troop 2G and Crew 2, and we think Scouting America is an incredible way for young people to build confidence, leadership, and lifelong friendships. But if another activity is the place where your child finds their people? We're cheering for that too. Because when youth organizations work together, our entire community benefits, as does the next generation of youth.
