Schroeder College & Career Readiness

Schroeder College & Career Readiness This College & Career Readiness resource will assist students and parents in answering their questions about post-secondary plans.

According to HB 3, college readiness is defined as the level of preparation a student must attain in English language arts and mathematics courses to enroll and succeed, without remediation, in an entry-level general education course for credit in the same content area for a baccalaureate degree or associate degree program [House Bill 3, Section 39.024a]. Today, college readiness also means career

readiness. Every high school graduate will not plan to attend a college or university, but the majority of the fastest-growing jobs that require a high school diploma, pay a salary above the poverty line for a family of four, and provide opportunities for career advancement require knowledge and skills comparable to those expected for admissions in colleges and universities (ACT, 2006). We must educate all high school students as if all students plan for post-secondary education because anything less will not give students the foundation that will enable them to learn additional skills as their jobs change or as they change jobs throughout their careers.

A new year offers a chance to reset, make a few smart changes, and get ahead before things get busy.
Students should map out the entire semester before it gets busy.
Students should note important dates on their calendar now including school breaks, ACT/SAT/ASVAB test dates, extracurricular commitments, application deadlines to name a few. Busy weeks are much easier to manage when students know it’s coming.

A new school year offers a chance to reset, make a few smart changes, and get ahead before things get busy.
Students should think about what they would really like to accomplish. They don’t need a long list. One or two goals they actually care about are enough.
A good question to ask is:
If this school year goes really well, what will be different by May?
The answer can help students decide where to put their time and energy.
