We have been busy lately: been bird watching, went to the zoo,(didn't take many pictures), checked out our chicks in their new home and learned about our gigantic pumpkin. Enjoy checking things out. We also watered and checked on our loofahs. Our beautiful pumpkin rotted and smelled up our classroom, so we learned about deterioration. We cut it open and cut away the rotten parts and collected seeds. We also learned why there was a stem and that it is called a peduncle. We took some pieces to fertilize the raised garden beds and the rest went to the woods. We also watered the loofahs and checked out their stems.

Today we celebrated Dolly Day with music, a special story, and some Dolly Day hats!

We listened to several songs by Dolly Parton and enjoyed the story Coat of Many Colors. We learned that Dolly’s mother made her special coat from colorful pieces of fabric and that, even though Dolly loved her coat, other children made fun of her for wearing it.

That gave us the perfect opportunity to talk about kindness. We discussed how our words can hurt other people’s feelings and why we should never make fun of someone because of what they wear, what they have, or because they may be different from us.

We also talked about how something doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to be special—sometimes the things made with love are worth the most.

A fun day with a pretty important lesson tucked inside.

Today was a BIG day! Our 9 chicks officially moved to their new home outside! 🌿☀️

Before the big move, we took a closer look at each one—and we are discovered that every single chick is different! They have their own colors, markings, and little personalities already. 🥰

Both Outdoor Kindergarten classes gathered together to check out our feathered friends. 💛🐣

Now we have one VERY important job left to do…

THEY NEED NAMES! 😂🐥

Nine chicks. Nine personalities. Nine names to choose. This should be fun! 🤭

Today we made homemade spaghetti sauce. Ms. Nicole, joined us and read “Strega Nona” by Tomie dePaola. And what better way to follow a story about a magical pasta pot than by making some pasta of our own?!

The best part? We were learning the WHOLE time! ❤️

🔢 We counted and measured our ingredients.
👀 We used our eyes to look at the tomatoes.
👃 We used our noses to smell that yummy sauce cooking.
👂 We used our ears to hear the sauce bubbling away.
✋ We used our sense of touch to feel the warmth of our food.
👅 And our FAVORITE part…we used our sense of taste to gobble up our delicious spaghetti! 😋

Who knew a story, math and our five senses could be so YUMMY?!

A little note: Not everyone got a turn helping with today’s cooking, but no worries! We have lots more adventures ahead of us, and everyone will get a chance to help before our year is over!

When it is very hot outside and you have been learning about the 5 senses you learn about touch; how do you cool hot things off? Adding cool water into the mix helps! We played in our butterfly garden and cooled things down with some water. We also learned how to use our mud kitchen sink. Learning outside is so much fun no matter the temperature.

Today we began learning about our five senses, and what better place to explore them than outside! We headed to the fire pit to see how many of our senses we could use.

👂 We heard kids playing and cars driving by.
✋ We felt the wind blowing and the bumpiness of the tires.
👃 We smelled the clean, fresh air.
👀 We saw leaves, trees, clouds, cars, and so much more!

Then it was time to play! As we explored and had fun, we continued using our senses to notice the world around us.

What does it mean to be an Outdoor Kindergarten teacher? Sometimes it means becoming a porcupine so your kids don't have to. We went out to get weeds out of the butterfly garden today and discovered they were covered in "stick tights or tag a long" seeds. When we got finished I looked like a porcupine lol. The kids learned a great lesson about seeds attaching themselves to animal fur or clothing and rehoming themselves. It was really cool. The kids did a great job cleaning out a big area of the butterfly garden. There is always a lesson to be learned if you look for it.
