Baldy Retreat is an annual four-day event that focuses on Inner Arts - using the martial arts of Aikido and Tai Chi, Qigong and Zen as methods to experience and explore energy flow and our connections to each other and the world around us. ong weekend visit with dojo students and fellow instructors at the Mt. Baldy Zen Center, approaching the abbot and Zen Master, Joshu Sasaki Roshi, with the concept. The monastic camp proved to be an ideal setting for the blend of mindful training and meditation. Now in its 37th year, the Mt. Baldy Retreat helps participants explore their understanding of the martial arts as well as their own thoughts and perceptions. The retreat is led by five high-ranking instructors who are experienced in a wide range of martial arts and meditative practices. Senseis are Frank McGouirk, 7th dan, Shihan; Cyndy Hayashi, 7th dan, Shihan; Danielle Smith, 7th dan; Teja Bell, 6th dan; and Michael Smith, 6th dan. The ordained monks and nuns of the Mt. Baldy Zen Center lead the morning meditations and join the retreat classes. They also share stories and insights with guests in casual conversations throughout the weekend, especially over the delicious meals and snacks. Beginners, curious first-timers, family members and visitors are as welcome as the visiting experts and instructors who come to enjoy the unique approach of the Mt. We follow what O-Sensei called "the Great Path beyond technique." He said:

The Mt. Baldy Retreat offers a limited number of full-weekend registrations, which include on-site cabin accommodations and all meals for people who want to participate from Friday evening through Monday noon. Secure those accommodations by registering early. There is also a Day Retreat option for participants who want to come one day on either Saturday or Sunday. (Lunch is included in the registration.) Watch for the announcements in Autumn for the next retreat. Baldy Retreat is presented by Aikido Ai each May on the Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day is always the last Monday of May.
