Thank you to everyone who came out for Brenda Smith’s Meet & Greet yesterday and to those who also joined in canvassing for Trustee Area 1.

It was great to see educators, families, and community members spending time together, connecting with residents, and being part of the conversation about East Whittier schools.

eWEa is highlighting our endorsed candidate for East Whittier City School District Board of Education, Trustee Area One — Brenda Smith.

Brenda brings about 24 years of experience in education, including kindergarten, second grade, transitional kindergarten, and intervention. She also has deep ties to the Whittier community as both an educator and a parent.

During her interview with eWEa, Brenda shared that she decided to run because she wanted to continue advocating for students and have a role in improving the policies that affect them.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll be sharing more from our candidate interviews so our community can hear directly about the issues discussed with each candidate.

💙 Our members’ concerns deserve to be heard.

Tonight, eWEA President Brent Vogelman brought several concerns from our members directly to the Board of Education—concerns involving working conditions, student needs and supports, available resources, and the need for clear and consistent policies and procedures when issues involving educators arise.

These may be different issues, but they share something important: our educators deserve clear expectations, appropriate resources, consistent processes, and professional respect.

This is why we show up. This is why we speak publicly. And this is why having a strong association matters.

When our members raise concerns, eWEA will raise them too.

Monday’s Board meeting includes several items that directly impact educators and our schools. eWEa will be watching the discussion and action closely, especially around employee benefits, District finances, professional standards, and Proposition 28.

Board meetings are one of the clearest places to see how decisions are being made and where District priorities are going.

We encourage members to stay engaged, follow the meeting, and continue paying attention to the decisions that affect our working conditions and our students.
