Sad to see; end of an era.

This is really sad. XRX and Stitches are done and gone. Remember to support the yarny businesses you love. Otherwise this happens.

A woman knitting by a d**e in Skye around 1905.
It was common for women to knit whilst they walked. Women are frequently seen to be multi-tasking with their ever-working hands in photographs around the coasts of rural Scotland.

Women knitted to keep their families warm, and also sold their woolen crafts for extra income. There are distinctive knitting patterns from different parts of Scotland.

The photographer, MEM Donaldson was particularly interested in the people of the Western Highlands. She captures a striking depth in her photographs: seeing these images gives a sense of closeness to these folks.
Our podcast frequently looks at the history of working-class people, give it a wee listen!
