The basics.

For the 3 or 4 of you out there that still shoot iron sights.

Target and rear sight can be blurry, front sight should be clear and sharp.

I want to test a set of budget optics from Monstrum, the Cyborg series 1x red dot and 3x magnifier set. At a $149 price point on Amazon, the construction appears pretty robust, and the rail mount seems pretty solid without any wiggling or sloppiness.

The dot is clear and adjustments are both audible and tactile. I did a quick boresight at around 15 yards and will range test to evaluate how true it lines up. The only negative so far is there are no aftermarket lens covers to fit Monstrum’s optics. Is did find that there is a neoprene cover similar to Scopecoat that does fit (link in comments).

So far, for an inexpensive optic and magnifier, this seems to fit the bill for your budget carbine).

The event isn’t over after the shooting stops.

When interacting with law enforcement after acting in self-defense, it's important to remember both what you say and what you don’t say can be held against you, along with what you do and don’t do. Shawn Vincent dives into this in regards to the George Alan Kelly case in his newest article, Conflicting Statements. Consistency matters. If you orient your magazines properly, and you train to reload consistently using the same motions over and over, you won’t have to be “thinking” when the time comes to be “doing”. I orient my magazines so that whether they are vertical or horizontal, I ALWAYS grip them so my index finger is placed on the “bullet side” and the baseplate is engaged with both my palm and remaining fingers. Positive engagement and I know exactly how it’s going to be inserted without fumbling.

The orientation and placement of your pistol magazines matter! Rather than it being dogmatic or insisting on uniformity for appearance's sake, there are reasons why trainers can insist on specific equipment set-ups. The vast majority of those I have worked with or know insist

If your carry pistol is fitted with a red dot sight, I recommend getting a “lens pen” to keep the lens debris-free. Dust, clothing lint, etc. combined with moisture in the air creates issues with proper acquisition of the reticle. Amazon has a very cheap set of 3 for around $7.50. I keep one in the car console.
