We are devastated to announce the passing of our mascot, field boss, and best friend Jax.
Jax was the kindest dog you could meet and absolutely loved his life here on the farm. We bought him as a protection dog, but he never met a stranger. The most harm you might get from him was being licked to death.
He was handsome. He was distinguished. He could run like the wind and loved showing off how fast he was. But most of all, he was the most loyal dog we have ever owned.
He loved everyone who ever worked here and would get the zoomies every time he heard the printer because he knew we were printing a list of the day's chores right before the help arrived.
He died of acute kidney injury, which resulted in complete failure. Jax urinated on the rug several nights starting the week of September 21st, which wasn’t like him, and we noticed that he was having issues urinating outside. On Monday the 28th, we took him to the vet for bloodwork, and his kidney numbers were extremely high (Creatinine of 4 when 0.6-1.4 is normal/BUN 40 when 7-27 is normal).
We were sent home with antibiotics and prescription food, but Monday night the 28th was the last time he ate. We brought him back to the vet that Thursday, October 1st, and those numbers had worsened significantly. (Creatinine of 12/BUN was over 140, which is the highest their machine would read)
We left him there from Thursday through Monday evening, where he had IVs and more antibiotics. We picked him up Monday evening as blood work showed the antibiotics were not improving his condition, with plans to bring him to an internal specialist in Ft. Worth on Tuesday morning. His condition deteriorated so quickly overnight that we knew he wouldn’t make the drive. He ended up passing away at 3:15 yesterday, October 6th, on the way back to the vet in Meridian.
We preserved his kidneys and other specimens that were overnighted to Texas ATM for testing. We have some ideas about what might have caused such a sudden onset, and for our own sanity, we need to answer how this happened to a super healthy 4.5-year-old dog.
We want to thank Bosque County Vet Clinic in Meridian. Dr. Martinez and crew went above and beyond anything we could have asked for, including an initial autopsy and sending the necessary organs and samples off for further testing and review.
With these events happening so quickly, we are both heartbroken and stunned. Jax’s memory will live forever in our hearts and the minds of anyone who knew him. We love you, buddy, and can't wait to see you again.
