Huge KUDOS to Chloe Koopman, Ayla Schotanus and Natalie Malley from Troop 64534, Northbridge Middle School students, who earned their Silver Award at the beginning of October with their Bathroom Makeover Project.
They started their project in February by finding a need in their community. They found that the bathrooms at NMS were in need of some serious TLC. The girls interviewed students and did not hear any positive things about the bathrooms in their current conditions. Their goal was to create a more positive environment for middle school students.
During the spring, Chloe, Ayla and Natalie worked closely with their principal, Susan Palmer-Howes, to develop a plan to redo the second floor bathrooms. They created a survey asking the students to pick paint colors and tell them how they felt about the bathrooms, as well as what they would like to see improved. The girls held fundraisers to cover the costs of the supplies. They recruited student volunteers to help clean and paint the bathrooms. The girls chose inspiring quotes to put on the walls. They purchased new mirrors and other amenities for the girls' bathrooms on all three floors. The girls also spoke to advisors for Student Council and Girls Who Code to make sure those groups could help maintain the bathrooms after the project was completed.
This was quite the project and the girls did an incredible job. They did the majority of the work during their first week of summer vacation. They each put in about 60 hours of work and the total cost of the project was $2438.16.
