🚨 SCAM ALERT: FAKE COURT NOTICE TEXTS 🚨
The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens about a toll/traffic violation scam currently circulating via text message.
Citizens are receiving messages containing what appears to be an official notice from Wake County District Court, claiming you have an outstanding violation and must pay immediately or appear in court to avoid penalties.
👉 THIS IS A SCAM.
Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated. These messages may:
• Include your name and address
• Reference real judges or law enforcement
• Mention local courts and locations
• Appear as an official legal document (see example below)
These tactics are designed to make the message look legitimate and create urgency.
đźš« KNOW THE SIGNS:
It is a scam if you are asked to provide or send:
• Social Security numbers
• Credit/debit card information
• Payments through QR codes, links, money apps, or prepaid cards
Court officials and the Sheriff’s Office will NEVER request sensitive financial information via text or email.
⚠️ WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
• Do NOT click links or scan QR codes
• Do NOT respond or send money
• Mark the message as spam/junk
• Delete the message
If you’re unsure, contact your local Clerk of Superior Court directly to verify any claims.
