🧵✨ Stitching, Creating, and Having a SEW Much Fun at 4-H Sewing Camp! ✨🧵

Our 4-H youth had an amazing time learning new sewing skills during our 4-H Sewing Camp! On day one, they explored hand-sewing techniques and created their very own hand-embroidered hats. 🪡🧢

On day two, it was time to put their sewing machine skills to the test! Youth learned how to use a sewing machine while creating awesome handmade bags. 👜✨

The best part was hearing all the excitement as the kids talked about the many fun activities they planned to do with their new bags! From carrying their favorite things to taking them on adventures, these bags are ready to go! 😄

🏆🔥 COLUMBUS COUNTY 4-H IS BRINGING HOME THE HARDWARE! 🔥🏆

We are SO excited to celebrate four of our Columbus County 4-H youth who recently competed at the North Carolina 4-H State Presentation Competition! 🥩🍗🔥

This competition brought together some of the top grilling competitors from across the entire state of North Carolina—and our Columbus County youth showed up ready to GRILL! 👏👏👏

🥇 Akin Blackwell – 1st Place in Pork Grilling
🥈 Gage Milliken – 2nd Place in Chicken Grilling
🥈 Langston Keel – 2nd Place in Pork Grilling
🏅 William Benton – 4th Place in Beef Grilling

That’s FOUR Columbus County 4-H youth placing at the STATE level! 🎉🎉🎉

These young people have worked hard to develop their grilling skills, learn about food safety, practice their techniques, and build confidence—and their hard work definitely paid off! 💪🔥

🌿🐑🫐 CLOVERBUD CAMP: A WEEK OF EXPLORING! 🦈🪨🌳

What do you get when you put a group of curious 5–8-year-olds together and give them a whole week to explore, discover, and get a little dirty? You get an AMAZING week at 4-H Cloverbud Camp! 💚

This camp is designed especially for youth ages 5–8 who love the outdoors, asking questions, and exploring the world around them. And these Cloverbuds definitely made the most of it!

🫐 Day 1 – Mote’s Blueberry Farm
We headed to Mote’s Blueberry Farm where the kids picked blueberries straight from the bushes. They learned about where their food comes from—and they also learned that blueberries are apparently VERY hard to resist! 😂 We probably should have weighed a few of our campers on the way in and on the way out…just to see how many blueberries made it into their bellies instead of their buckets! 🫐🤣

🐑 Day 2 – Scott’s Sheep Farm
The kids got up close with sheep and learned how farmers watch for parasites and how they can tell when a sheep may have a problem. They also discovered that not every sheep is raised for wool! There was plenty of hands-on learning and lots of great questions.

🦖 Day 3 – Museum of Natural Sciences
Our explorers traveled to the Museum of Natural Sciences where they learned about the life stages of insects and animals and how those life cycles compare. Then came one of the biggest hits of the day—fossil digging! 🪨 And YES…several of our young explorers found shark teeth! 🦈

🌳 Day 4 – Lake Waccamaw State Park
We finished our week at Lake Waccamaw State Park with an entertaining and educational nature walk. The kids explored the natural world around them and learned about the unique environment of the park. They even got to learn about and explore the mussels that are endemic to Lake Waccamaw! 🐚🌿

What a week of farms, fossils, animals, blueberries, nature, and adventure! 💚

We are so proud of our little Cloverbuds for being curious, asking questions, trying new things, and getting excited about the world around them. That’s what 4-H is all about! 🍀

🎨 Getting Dirty & Having a Blast! 🏺✨

Our kids had an absolute ball in May at our Heritage Skills Class, and let’s just say... things got a little muddy in the best way possible!

Check out the amazing creations in the photos below! Here is a peek at what our young artists got up to:

Hands-On Creation: They mastered the basics of hand-building clay—pinching, coiling, and slab-building their way to awesome functional (and super decorative!) pottery.

Unleashing Creativity: From adding cool textures to shaping unique details, their fine motor skills and imaginations were working overtime to bring their ideas to life.

A Taste of History: They didn't just play with clay; they traveled back in time to learn how traditional pottery and craftsmanship played a huge role in history for both art and everyday life!

Have a child who loves to create or wants to learn a new skill? We still have a few spots available in our 4-H Sewing Camp for youth ages 9 and older!

Over two fun-filled mornings, participants will learn valuable sewing skills while making projects they can proudly take home.

🪡 Day 1 – Hand Sewing
Youth will learn basic hand-stitching techniques while creating their own hand-stitched embroidered hat.

🧵 Day 2 – Machine Sewing
Participants will learn how to safely operate a sewing machine as they sew their very own tote bag.

📅 August 4–5, 2026
🕘 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
📍 Columbus County Cooperative Extension Center
💲 Cost: $45 per participant
(No refunds. Payment by check or money order.)

🎉🏆 **Congratulations to Our Columbus County 4-H District Activity Day Winners!** 🏆🎉

Columbus County 4-H is incredibly proud of the outstanding youth who represented our county at the 2026 Southeast District Activity Day held on June 18 at the University of Mount Olive!

District Activity Day brings together 4-H members from 18 counties across southeastern North Carolina to compete in public speaking, demonstrations, illustrated talks, outdoor cookery, talent, and other presentation events. Youth spend months preparing to showcase their skills, knowledge, and confidence in hopes of earning a place at the state competition.

We are excited to celebrate our amazing participants!

Calling all North Carolina 4-H members with laying hens! If your flock is currently producing eggs, this is a fun opportunity to learn more about egg quality, poultry production, and friendly competition.

Participants may submit up to two sets of six (½ dozen) eggs, which will be judged on:

🦃 Registration is NOW OPEN for the 2026 Southeast 4-H Turkey Project! 🦃

Do you have a young person who is interested in animals, agriculture, or learning where food comes from? The Southeast 4-H Turkey Project is a fun, hands-on opportunity for youth to learn responsibility while raising their own turkeys!

Through this project, youth will:
🐥 Receive 3 hen turkey poults in mid-August.
📚 Learn about animal husbandry, biosecurity, farm management, and record keeping.
📝 Complete a project record book to document their experiences.
💻 Participate in educational Zoom and in-person workshops.
🏆 Compete in the Southeast Turkey Show, where they'll demonstrate their knowledge and present their birds to a judge.

At the end of the project, the youth and a parent/guardian will attend a supervised processing workshop. Families may choose to keep 2 of the harvested turkeys and donate one of them to a local food bank.

Please note: This is a terminal 4-H project, which means all turkeys must be processed at the conclusion of the project.
