One successful lesson for the SLO 'Ethics in Literature' was:
PART I: Have students reflect and enter in the graded (credit or 0) electronic discussion post their definition of ethics. (2 minutes) PART II: Review with students a definition for 'ethics' and criteria for an 'ethical person.'
PART III: Prepare the students for a story. Provide them with a domiant theme and a list of characters and character descriptions. Additionally, direct the students to the 'guide questions' for the lesson. Mine was: Which character might you hire for the position of Chief Officer for compliance and Ethics at RWJ Medical Center?
PART IV: Have students open to the short story "The Rainy River" by Tim O'Brien. Have the class listen to the audio version of the story.
PART V: Break students into self-selected groups of 4. Assign each group a different character to discuss for 3 minutes. Example: Group G discusses the pros and cons of hiring Tim for the position. Group H discussees the pros and cons of hiring Elroy for the position.
PART VI: Begin the whole-class discussion. Start with what your initial question--dominant theme (or ask this at the end of the whole-class debriefing).
PART VII: For the final 10 minutes of class, have the students post to the class discussion.
