The DNEC tutoring method is a structured, three-step process focused on identifying and teaching within a student's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD).
1. Pre-Assessment: Begin with a slightly challenging task the student attempts independently to establish their current ability level and pinpoint what they cannot yet do alone.
2. Guided Practice: Reintroduce the task with direct support (scaffolding), such as offering hints, modeling strategies, breaking problems down, or asking guiding questions.
3. Observation & Analysis: During guided practice, carefully observe how the student responds to the support. This identifies their true ZPD—the tasks they can achieve only with help—and rules out concepts that are currently too difficult even with assistance.
