Terrestrial Forming Pottery Studio A historic pottery studio open to the public to enjoy our galleries, retail spaces, sculpture garden ,education and firing opportunities! See potters at work.

In the woods near Lake Michigan and Duck Lake State Park is the pottery studio of Peter F. Johnson, known locally as "Peter the Potter." For over forty years he has created pottery, which is lead-free and ready for the dishwasher and the microwave. Peter is a native of Amherst, Massachusetts. He spent his youth in coastal Maine and northern Vermont and relocated to Whitehall, Michigan, in the early seventies. He is a graduate of Albion College, Albion, Michigan, where he studied ceramic arts with Richard Leach. He taught pottery in the Albion College adult education program and at Alfred University, New York, where he obtained his masters in fine arts. Besides sculptural, outdoor pieces, some on a large scale, he creates functional forms from dinnerware to large bowls, birdbaths to lamps and sinks. His pottery can be found at his studio showroom, the Gallery Uptown in Grand Haven, and the White River Gallery in Montague. Come for a visit and a tour. Open daily 10-5pm

Figured it was time to show the faces of the artists at Terrestrial Forming Pottery.

Peter “the potter” Johnson and Kim Funk are the potter’s producing art, educating fellow potters and connecting with the community in Whitehall.

Peter is a legend in our area and for good reason. His art is expressive, natural and thought provoking often inspired by the energy of the world around him and within. He has nurtured many a potter through his apprenticeships and is always sharing his knowledge of the art. He continues to make and produce masterful pots at the studio and you can often find him at his wheel or if it’s nice out probably on a bike ride.

Kim has been working at the studio for 5 years and creates whimsical folk inspired art. She began as one of Peter’s apprentices in 2021 and now manages day to day operations at the studio while expanding educational opportunities. Although she loves making, she has a draw to educate and connect with fellow creators. This is why the studio now offers lessons, workshops and open studio hours.

We are so happy to share the studio and our passion with you and are so appreciative to all those curious about pottery and patron our unique space. Hope to see you out at the studio soon!
