This week during the Great Fish Community Challange we want to feature some of ways you can view the valuable data you help support!

Every year, the Whitefish Lake Institute shares the information we collect with local government, partner organizations, educators, researchers, and community members. From our data dashboards to public presentations, fifth-grade program, and online resources, we believe good science should be accessible to everyone.

What’s going on in this video? We’re using a tool called a van dorn to sample water from a specific lake depth. The van dorn is lowered to the desired depth and then a metal “bullet” called a messenger is dropped and hits the van dorn clicking it shut capturing the water sample. This is just one of the many ways we look below the surface to sample lakes. If you’d like to support our work please consider making a gift through the Great Fish Community Challenge! Its that time of the year again! Students from Whitefish High School's art classes have been hard at work painting storm drains all around downtown Whitefish. WLI’s Storm Drain Stewardship Program engages local students in watershed protection efforts. By painting the storm drains, the program helps raise awareness that stormwater flows untreated into nearby rivers and lakes. Photos show the storm drain art in progress keep an eye out around town for the finished work!

A Huge Thank you for the Whitefish Community Foundation for awarding the Whitefish Lake Institute a Community Grant! This year the grant will support our new nearshore sampling initiative . Nearshore sampling will help us better understand the impacts shoreline development may have on Whitefish Lake.
