The Wisconsin Association of Wedding Officiants (WAWO) is Wisconsin’s only source of Professional Wedding Officiants that are not only qualified to perform weddings but also certified. WAWO certifies all of its members Officiants, making sure that they have the qualifications to perform weddings - and Wedding Officiants with valid qualifications help prevent wedding fraud.
Wedding Fraud happens more often than what people think. Due to a number of factors at least 20 to 25% of all weddings are officiated by people who are not qualified to perform weddings. For the wedding party, having an unqualified party officiate a wedding may have signifiant repercussions, here are some examples:
SHADY CREDENTIALS: A couple gets married and uses a cousin of the Groom to perform the wedding. The groom gets what appears to be certification from an online wedding officiate credentialing service. The brother takes the class and gets a certificate. The problem is that the State in which the marriage license was issued may not recognize the school where the brother received the certificate. The couple gets married, not knowing that the wedding may not be valid and, consequently, it could be argued that the marriage may not be invalid. So, if the couple gets a divorce, one of the parties could argue that the wedding was never officially performed and therefore is null and void.
LACK OF CREDENTIALS: A couple gets married by someone who says that they have wedding officiant credentials. The couple takes the person’s word for it and does verify credentials. The couple gets married and then decide to do a Will. Then, one of the spouses dies. The Will is then challenged on the grounds that the marriage was never valid because the wedding officiant was not qualified to perform the wedding. Surviving spouse is left with attorney fees and really bad feelings that the wedding may not have been valid.
