Eighth Grade Engineering Module Pilot Survey

UT Austin's Engineer Your World team is developing a pilot engineering module to support 8th-grade science teachers in implementing the required Engineering standards within the Science TEKS.

We want our materials to be realistic and useful in classroom settings, so we are conducting a brief (~5-minute) needs assessment to understand current classroom conditions, instructional time, and resource constraints. This will help us develop lessons that support the TEKS you're already required to teach, reducing your planning burden rather than adding to it.

Why your input matters: Our team has partnered with hundreds of high schools nationwide for over 15 years to develop, pilot, and refine engineering curriculum. However, we recognize that the 8th-grade classroom is its own unique environment. We want to ensure these new materials are practical and useful for your specific context.

Are you a middle school science teacher passionate about hands-on STEM learning?

The Texas STEM Teacher Corps, supported by the National Science Foundation, is now recruiting exceptional Texas teachers to lead the integration of science and engineering education.

Selected participants will:

Receive a $15,000 stipend each year for four years

Join a statewide community of STEM teacher leaders

Participate in professional learning opportunities

Travel to national STEM conferences

Conduct a capstone project aligned with your professional goals

Connect with the National STEM Teacher Corps network

Eligibility:
Current middle school (grades 6-8) science teacher in Texas

Minimum of 5 years of full-time teaching experience

Teach at least 50% time in the classroom

U.S. citizen or permanent resident

Willingness to participate for four years

Administrator support for participation

Ability to attend an in-person professional learning summer institute each year, likely in mid-late July (July 27-29, 2026)

Calling Engineering/STEM Program Volunteers Past and Present!

Volunteers play an essential role in creating meaningful engineering and STEM learning experiences for youth. Shauna Adams, a PhD candidate in Engineering Education at Purdue University, is conducting a dissertation study to better understand how volunteers in STEM youth programs and STEM volunteers in other youth programs access organizational and curricular supports and resources. “Organizational Resources and Supports for Volunteers in Engineering Youth Programs: A Mixed Methods Study” (IRB-2025-1226).



If you have volunteered:
• With an engineering- or computer science-focused youth organization,

or

• In an engineering- or computer science- focused role within a broader youth program



And:

• Are 18 years old or older
• Lives or lived in the United States at the time of volunteering

• Identify as a volunteer

• Spends volunteer time directly with youth or is responsible for developing youth programming for this organization.



You are invited to complete our eligibility questionnaire.



Participation involves:
• A 25-minute online survey
• An optional opt-in for a 45-minute follow-up interview

All responses will be anonymized.

Your insights can help inform how youth volunteers seek resources and access organizational supports.
