The WCKA holds a school competition named after the student who won the previous quarter's competition every quarter. Students can test their limits through healthy competition, and sportsmanship is emphasised to increase cooperation and facilitate team building. The Lukas Hanson Invitational 2022 took place in the tidal lagoon that forms in the Trairi river mouth....

TEAM. WCKA believe that through commitment to a team, students grow athletically and gain insights that extend beyond the sport itself.

Team development is strategic, beginning with assembling a group of instructors and students who are passionate about their sport and about life.

Being part of a team that is centred around a dynamic and challenging sport helps students understand the value of working together and making sacrifices that serve the community as a whole.

Though the group process is sometimes demanding, a tightly knit and supportive group develops while students and staff travel, train, learn and live with one another.

Throwback to when 📷 joined the awesome team back in 2018.

Travel and adventure is one of our core values. Through travel, our students build empathy, broaden their perspectives, and connect with people and places of the world in authentic and meaningful ways. This picture is from a Spanish lesson in Peru a few years back when students were tasked with buying groceries for dinner using their Spanish language skills. They thrived on the opportunity to operate a bit outside their comfort zones. Picture: Ben Gillespie, Students: Tommy, Tim, Lev, Jenna and Mael, Teacher: Polly Crathorne

Senior spotlight ‘22ayer hales from Canada and Turks and Caicos. He is heading to the University of Trent in September. Dylan’s favourite discipline is freestyle. His commitment to freestyle no matter the conditions meant that he was even throwing blind judge 3s on big air days in Blouberg, Cape Town. In the classroom, he was known for his sharp chemistry know-how and new-found aptitude for DuoLingo. You’ll find him working hard cutting and cleaning up trees this summer, or sleeping - he did win “most sleep” in our school awards after all.

We are proud of graduate who is heading off to UNC Chapel Hill in the Fall. While at World Class, Martha rocked the old school, frontroll one footers and double front rolls were her speciality. She also picked up the strapless discipline with remarkable speed. Martha can bake a mean cake and is interested in nutrition - she plans to major in this. We were grateful for her Krav Maga skills when our morning workouts incorporated boxing gloves. Martha’s teachers know her by her consistent academic excellence. Martha’s new found interest in Literature (most notably, Greek Mythology) meant her consumption of books went through the roof during her last Semester at WCKA. This summer you might find Martha playing racket sports - she is UK Fives vice champion after all. And making use of her IKO instructors qualification. Photos

cleaned up at the school competitions in both South Africa and Italy! In the classroom Grant was known for his skill for public speaking, ability to read half the assigned book for Literature class on the plane to the semester and turning academia into freestyle raps. This year, he most notably worked on getting his kite lower on his mega loops. After learning an unhooked front to blind in under two weeks in quarter two, Grant hung up his freestyle boots and rigged up his short lines, as Big Air was calling. You might find Grant foiling in the Columbia River Gorge this summer, in between teaching kiting (IKO certified), gyming and ice baths. Photos:

Senior spotlight ‘22. .green11 has graduated from WCKA and is heading to the University of Oregon this September. While at WCKA, he notably polished his policy brief writing skills in the classroom as well as carrying out his school president duties. On the water, Seb worked away at his old school and strapless with his unique surf style hinting at his childhood growing up surfing in California. When there was no wind in South Africa, Seb would catch waves on his strapless (kite!) board. You’ll find him in Hood River this summer, he’s just completed his IKO instructors course if you need a lesson!Photos: .morando
