The Windward School

The Windward School Leading independent day school serving students in grades 1–9 with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities.

Empowering students with language-based learning disabilities to achieve their full potential. With three campuses, one in Manhattan and two in White Plains, New York, Windward's mission is to remediate students' dyslexia or other language-based learning disability and to return students to mainstream schools. Nationally recognized for its development of instructional programs designed specifically to help students achieve language proficiency, Windward's academic curriculum is research-based and multisensory in nature and is designed to give students the skills they need to succeed in school and return with confidence to mainstream educational settings. The Windward School's academic program focuses on the three basic challenges faced by students with language-based learning disabilities:

-Acquiring the academic strategies and skills necessary to reach their academic potential.
-Developing self-confidence in their ability to achieve success.
-Understanding their learning differences so they can become effective self-advocates. Students enter and leave Windward at different points throughout grades 1 through 9. 98% of Windward students return to mainstream schools after it is determined they have completed the Windward academic program and are ready to return to a mainstream school.

Starting a new school year can feel like a big step, but you’re not taking it alone!

Before graduation this past June, we asked our grade 8 students to share their advice for incoming students. The biggest takeaways: Get to know your teachers, connect with your classmates, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. The Windward community is here to support you every step of the way, whether you’re a new or a returning student!

In July, Carol Perlmutter and Nancy Nemlich visited Windward's John J. Russell Campus to meet with Interim Head of School Alexis Pochna and Director of Faculty Recruitment and Special Projects Sandy Schwarz. During this visit, they had the opportunity to see the newly installed signage in memory of Carol's sister, Judi Nemlich. We are so grateful for Judi's thoughtful recognition of Windward in her estate plans, which will help future generations of students access a Windward education!
