What's Next - Denied at Your Early Decision College?
College Planning Tip Sheet
So, you have been turned down by your Early Decision college. It is not an easy time, but you are not alone. Tens of thousands of high school seniors face similar disappointment every December. Most of those who are a few years older than you have gone on to attend and fall in love with other quality institutions, and many are now in law school, medical school, or are on other pathways to career success in spite of being denied as an ED applicant. Some would even tell you that, in hindsight, being denied by their ED school was the best thing that ever happened to them, given their love for the college they actually attended and the path to success they are now enjoying. Don't despair; you have lots of options. However, you also have lots of work to do and there are some important steps you need take.
Respond to your Early Decision School if Placed in Regular Decision Pool – Although your first choice college or university denied you for early decision, you may not have been completely eliminated from consideration. It is possible that they offered you the option for reconsideration on a regular decision basis. Acceptance of that proposition would have freed from your original obligation to enroll if admitted. Thus, you can look at other possibilities and make an informed decision after all of your schools have responded.
Send Out Additional Applications - If you had not already done so, it is necessary to send out applications to the other colleges and universities in which you are interested, paying attention to deadlines.
Plan Additional Campus Visits – Now that you are not obligated to attend one particular college, you have the gift of time for thoughtful consideration before you are faced with more decisions in the spring. Start thinking about the colleges on your list which you have not already visited. If possible, begin planning visits to those schools as soon as your schedule will allow. That way, you will be much better prepared when decision time comes, usually on May 1st of your senior year. It will also let the admissions officers know that you are a serious applicant. Your "demonstrated interest" can make a difference when your application is under consideration.
Expand your Horizons - Perhaps you were so confident about your early decision school that you really haven't considered other possibilities. If that is the case, it is time to shift into high gear and get back to work on your college search with serious consideration of alternate schools.
Leave No Stone Unturned – Use all the resources available to you. Talk with your school counselor to discuss options. If you have an independent college consultant, get in touch immediately for his or her recommendations. Find out if any of the teachers or administrators at your school attended the colleges you are considering and talk with them about their impressions of their undergraduate experience. And, of course, talk with your parents. They may be putting on a brave face, but they are concerned and will want to be of assistance at what may be a very stressful time for you. Give them a chance to help and listen to their thoughts and suggestions. Even if your parents didn't go to college, they have lots of valuable life experience which may be helpful to you in sorting out your course of action.

5 Tips for School Placement: Special Education Needs:
Tip 5. Colleges and universities vary widely in terms of the scope and nature of support services. Colleges do not conduct IEP meetings like those in K-12 schools. They offer support services that students with learning differences need to seek out on their own.
Improving the Odds: Tips for School Placement Success:
Tip 10. A family must be prepared to be heavily involved in the search, including writing the application and engaging in the interview process. There is no outsourcing of the role of the parent, so set expectations.
5 Tips for School Placement: Special Education Needs:
Tip 4. When moving intra-country or internationally, home/host expertise is the key. Cultural and language differences will create further challenges (i.e. outbound U.S. to inbound Asia Pacific). Understanding this dynamic and setting a family's expectations are incorporated within our overall "goodness of fit" and best option plan.
Improving the Odds: Tips for School Placement Success:
Tip 9. Be sensitive to the school's (and location's) culture; being direct and persistent may work in New York but may backfire in London.
5 Tips for School Placement: Special Education Needs:
Tip 3. Having a recent assessment and/or current IEP (Individualized Education Plan) will expedite the process. Determining a diagnosis during the move will mean the need to create the foundation for best placement. IEPs in the U.S. are different than their counterparts in Europe and Asia.
