As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we pause to remember all those whose lives were lost and to honor two beloved members of the Stepinac community: Lt. Raymond Murphy and Coach Joseph “Joe” Riverso.
Lt. Raymond Murphy, a member of FDNY Engine 39 and Ladder 16, answered the call to serve on September 11, courageously putting the lives of others before his own. At the time of the attacks, Raymond’s son was a student at Stepinac. His bravery and selflessness embody the very meaning of service and sacrifice. His legacy continues through a scholarship established by his wife for graduating Stepinac seniors whose fathers are or were members of the FDNY.
Coach Joe Riverso left an enduring mark on Stepinac as a student-athlete and coach. A standout on the football field, he captained the Varsity Football Team and earned First Team All-League honors in 1985. On September 11, Joe was working at Cantor Fitzgerald in the World Trade Center.
Beyond their accomplishments and professions, Raymond and Joe were fathers, sons, family members, friends, mentors and cherished members of our community. Their lives—and the impact they made on those who knew and loved them—will never be forgotten.
Twenty-five years later, the Stepinac community continues to remember their courage, their service and their legacy. May we always honor their memory.
